OpenText Global 360 SharePoint Survey: 2010 Deployments Increasing, Strategies Lacking (CMSWire)
Global 360 has done another SharePoint in the Enterprise survey and the results are on track with what's being said at the SharePoint Conference in Anaheim this week: SharePoint 2010 deployments are increasing.

Microsoft Sales Exceed Estimates on Strong Corporate Demand (Bloomberg BusinessWeek)
Microsoft Corp., the largest software maker, reported first-quarter sales that topped analysts’ predictions as companies invested in Office and server programs, outweighing poor consumer demand for computers. Sales rose 7.3 percent to $17.4 billion, compared with the $17.2 billion average analyst estimate compiled by Bloomberg. Net income in the period that ended in September rose 6.1 percent to $5.74 billion, or 68 cents a share, from $5.41 billion, or 62 cents, a year earlier, Microsoft said yesterday in a statement. Profit met the average 68-cent projection.

Small Businesses, Beware the Office 365 Fine Print (ZDNet)
I’ve been working with a small business lately, helping them with a long-overdue migration of their email from POP/SMTP servers to a cloud-based system. They had no interest in going Google. They use Microsoft Outlook extensively, so it was easy to narrow the choice down to hosted Microsoft Exchange. The question then became who should they choose as a provider. I sat down to do a quick comparison of my two preferred vendors: Microsoft Office 365 and Intermedia’s Office in the Cloud.

Microsoft's Ballmer Talks Windows Phone, Bing, Google (eWeek)
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer used a talk at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco to make the case for Bing and Windows Phone, two company platforms struggling to carve out some market share against Google. In the case of Bing, Ballmer painted the search engine’s progress over the past few years in a positive light, highlighting its increased market share and partnerships with companies such as Facebook and Yahoo.

A Deeper Dive Into Windows 8: Can Microsoft's Big Bet Pay Off? (ZDNet)
Microsoft released its first preliminary version of Windows 8 roughly a month ago. It’s somewhat raw, definitely incomplete, and absolutely the most controversial Windows version the company has ever considered releasing. There’s no question that this is a thoughtfully designed, thoroughly engineered release. If you had any doubts, just read through the Building Windows 8 blog, where Windows boss Steven Sinofsky and a parade of program managers have published one epic post after another explaining the history, evolution, and design philosophy that went into every new feature in Windows 8. As of today, that blog is up to 30 posts (at least one of which was more than 8800 words in length) and has inspired more than 8,000 comments.

SMB Nation: Where Did All the Cloud Supporters Go? (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft is famously "all in" on cloud computing. Is the same true of its partners in the small and midsize business (SMB) market? So far as attendees of the ninth annual SMB Nation Fall conference are concerned, maybe not so much. Held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 in Las Vegas, SMB Nation caters to the thousands of mostly smaller IT providers who serve companies with a few to a few dozen employees. While last year's show was packed with sessions about building a cloud service practice, this year's agenda leaned more heavily toward technical content about conventional, on-premises infrastructure solutions. That change stemmed from a poll of potential conferencegoers indicating tepid interest in cloud-related topics, according to Harry Brelsford, founder and chairman of SMB Nation Inc., the Bainbridge Island, Wash.-based company that hosts SMB Nation.

7 Steps for Building A Mobile Future In Your Enterprise (ReadWriteEnterprise)
One of the major trends we have seen in business in 2011 is how enterprises are coping with the movement of employees to bring their own mobile devices to work. There are a plethora of problems associated with the bring-your-own-device culture from security to application and device management and employee reimbursements. This is an ongoing topic that is not going to go away any time soon.

Around the Blogosphere
Death of the End User (AIIM)
Most popular SharePoint websites try to categorize their content based on the type of SharePoint user that comes to the website. This same categorization ends up applying to many SharePoint events as well. There are the 3 little boxes of "End Users, IT Pros & Developers". Firstly, please don't take this post as an assault, merely a suggestion, if you run one of these websites or events. IT Pros and Developers seem very fitting titles to me, it's the term "End User" that makes me cringe every time I need to utter it.

Secure Your SharePoint Extranet! (Geoff Varosky's Blog)
Or any extranet really… I presented tonight at the Baltimore SharePoint Users Group on Planning and Configuring Extranets in SharePoint 2010, and had the idea to make a quick post like this. If you are opening your organizations virtual doors to the outside world, please, please,  PLEASE, only open up port 443, and use a secure certificate (or Secure Sockets Layer certificate), a/k/a, SSL certificate, to secure it. Even if you do not have anything resembling a budget – you can still be secure. GoDaddy offers SSL certificates for as little as $12.99 – just use this link.

I Love SharePoint, So I Love to Answer Questions (SharePoint and Assessment Blog)
Thanks to sharepointszu for this lovely title quote. After 3 days at the European SharePoint Conference, it’s been really enjoyable meeting people and learning in such an open and friendly environment. I feel I’ve learned far more about SharePoint than I can ever retain! But they say that blogging for others (just like taking a test!) gives retrieval practice and helps you retain information, so here are answers to 10 questions I got answered at the conference.

SharePoint 2010 Governance - A Plan for Effective Use (EndUserSharePoint)
Yeah we have a SharePoint 2010 site, now what?" There is no telling how many times I have heard this. Organizations want the latest thing, SharePoint, but when they spend the thousands of dollars to get it, they do not know what to do with the on demand customization of a web site. One of the roadblocks to setting up a successful SharePoint 2010 site is the Governance that must accompany it to determine the goals, content, education and strategy. Each of these areas should be spelled out in a governance plan that accompanies the implementation of a SharePoint Site.

European SharePoint Conference Berlin – That Was Then, This Is Now (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I’ve been with Bamboo Solutions for over 10 years and been fortunate enough to either take part in, or stay plugged into almost every major SharePoint conference held around the world. The European SharePoint Conference 2011 has once again returned to Berlin, Germany. This is familiar stomping ground as it is being held at the same location that hosted the event held back in 2007. So much has changed in those intervening years, not only for SharePoint as a product, but for the entire SharePoint ecosystem. We ourselves have evolved from an emergent provider of Web Parts and add-ons in 2007 to a company which now offers complete solutions for project, community and knowledge management. I look back and see EU-SPC 2007 as the point where things really started to take off – not only for Bamboo, but for SharePoint in general. Here are a few of my observations comparing and contrasting the SharePoint ecosystem around this conference in 2007 and 2011.

Microsoft Updates
Working with Menus and Navigation Objects in SharePoint Server 2010 (ECM) (MSDN)
You declare horizontal and vertical menu instructions for navigation in XML for the master page. Two classes are used to make navigation work: PortalSiteMapDataSource and PortalSiteMapProvider. The PortalSiteMapProvider object provides the site hierarchy (navigation structure) and monitors the relationship between nodes. The PortalSiteMapDataSource object maps navigation features from the PortalSiteMapProvider and filters navigation elements to determine which are viewable to the user in the horizontal or vertical menus or in breadcrumbs.
