New SharePoint 2010 Adds Features for Admins (SearchWinIT)
IT administrators who manage Microsoft SharePoint Server will get a slew of feature and management improvements included in the new release, which launches next week with Office 2010. Some of the improvements to SharePoint 2010 include more governance controls over sites and more server resources, better built-in backup and new tools to manage and monitor the SharePoint farm.
5 Reasons to Use SharePoint on IT Projects (CIO)
SharePoint is an effective tool for organizing IT projects to increase productivity and communication, and to streamline project management. While SharePoint has many useful features, I have found some particularly beneficial to managing IT projects.
Microsoft Gets Some Heat Over HTML 5 Plans (PCWorld)
Microsoft came under fire from some of its rivals on Wednesday for its decision not to offer Internet Explorer 9 -- and hence support for the upcoming HTML 5 standard -- to users of its older Windows XP operating system. Microsoft said at its MIX developer conference in March that IE 9 won't be offered for XP. The reason, technical evangelist Giorgio Sardo said at the Web 2.0 Expo on Wednesday, is that IE 9 is a "modern browser," and getting the benefits of the hardware acceleration and other performance gains that it will offer requires a "modern OS."
Microsoft 2010 Line Stresses Collaboration and Governance (Fierce Content Management)
As you probably are acutely aware, Microsoft is coming out with a slew of new 2010 products shortly. Among those getting a 2010 facelift are Exchange, SharePoint and Office. Microsoft has tuned the 2010 line to encourage collaboration on the front end and make the tools easier to govern on the back end. Let's take a broad look at each of the products now.
Microsoft Offers Evaluation Kit for 2010 Products (Microsoft Certified Professional)
Microsoft is helping organizations get a jumpstart on its new software products with a kit designed to streamline the software evaluation process. The offering, called Proof of Concept Jumpstart Kit (version 1.0), is a package of virtualized products and tools that allows organizations to test new Microsoft technologies such as Windows 7, Office 2010 and application virtualization. The kit was announced in a blog last week, but it's apparently been around at least since April 7, as described in a forum devoted to the topic.
Microsoft's Lili Cheng on FUSE, Spindex, and More (CNET)
It's always fun to catch up with Microsoft's Lili Cheng. In addition to being a bundle of energy, she's always working on some interesting project. In her years, she has worked in Microsoft's research labs and on the Windows team. Since last year, she has been heading a social software project known as Future Social Experiences, or FUSE Labs. The effort, under Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie, looks at how to merge the social computing world with traditional software.
Microsoft Releases IE 9 Preview 2 (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft on Wednesday released the second platform preview of Internet Explorer 9 to gather further input from Web developers and testers. Version 2 of the browser preview, which works only on Windows Vista- and Windows 7-based machines, can be downloaded from Microsoft's test site here. Like its predecessor, this prototype lacks the basic features of a browser, such as an information bar. It also lacks basic security protections for Web browsing built into Internet Explorer 8.

Why It’s Important to Define Filters for a Good Picking Experience (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)
Hi this is Juan Balmori with another post for the BCS blog. This is a follow up to my previous post, about the external item picker. There is a problematic scenario that you may face: You are searching for an external item on the picker dialog that you are 100% sure it exists on the external system but the dialog does not seem to work properly and is not finding it. Worse it’s not even filtering by the specified search criteria.
Inconvenient Creating List Instances Using Feature Receivers (Waldek Mastykarz)
Recently I’ve been working with a Feature responsible for provisioning a list instance based on the Asset Library List Template (new in SharePoint 2010). In spite of the fact that everything seemed to be okay on my side (everything defined in the right place, the Asset Library Feature activated, and so on), I kept getting error that the Asset Library List Template does not exist. Finding the answer to this riddle was just a matter of… timing.
Easier SharePoint 2010 Migrations and Upgrade with Tools (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
The upgrade and migration space seems like it’s getting crowded. How does one navigate this space? First let me say that despite what I say, it will appear I’m biased due to my affiliation with Quest software as a paid employee, no I don’t have a quota or get paid any extra for this post. If anything there’s more risk than reward for a post like this. In the past when I’m asked specific requirements I try to push the vendor with the best solution. Here I will list the various Upgrade and Migration vendors. Many will be releasing their solutions RTM +60 including many making their announcements in June 2010 for their 2010 Solutions. I highly encourage you to explore their solutions with them. Special thanks to Owen Allen, Inna Gordin, and a great post by Deepak Bhat “10 Content Migration Tools to SharePoint Platform” which inspired me to not just include the traditional SharePoint vendors, but others that aren’t so traditional and dig even deeper for new ones. I hope you don’t get lost in this list. I hope you find the sorting by the source to be useful.
Extending PowerShell for SharePoint with Custom Commandlets (SharePoint Blues)
In my previous entry on SharePoint and PowerShell I promised I’d show you how to implement custom commandlets for Master Page manipulation. SharePoint 2010 ships with a wide array of commandlets, but none of them seem applicable here. This should also serve as a nice generic example on how to implement simple commandlets.

Updating Regional Settings of a Web Site in SharePoint (The Bamboo Team Blog)
This sounds like a simple thing right? Just set the Locale of the SPWeb object to the locale you are interested in. Not so fast - this does not work, it will change the Locale but not things like the calendar being used. What you have to do is to create a new instance of SPRegionalSettings and set a few properties like LocaleId, CalendarType and Time24.
