SharePoint 2010 Planning and Adoption Framework (CMSWire)
Day two of the SharePoint Conference in Anaheim (held October 3-6, 2011) and around 300 people packed into the room to listen to Todd Ray, a Senior Business Strategy Consultant within Microsoft Enterprise Strategy Services. As part of this group's Enterprise Strategy Program, Todd works with Microsoft's enterprise architect community to implement Microsoft's Value Realization Framework. The demand for this session was so high that people were turned away at the doors, and this was one of only a handful of sessions that had to be run a second time. Expectations were high…

Public Folder Migration to Office 365? Maybe Not so Easy! (WindowsITPro)
I wonder whether John Speare, one of Microsoft’s Senior Technical Writers, was overjoyed when he received the assignment to document the options that exist to move Exchange Public Folders to Office 365 in the form of a white paper that you can download from Microsoft’s web site. On the surface this was an easy task because the answer is simple: there is no way to migrate Public Folders to Office 365 because Office 365 does not support Public Folders. However, taking this approach would have meant that the white paper was very short, maybe a title page, Microsoft copyright notices, table of contents, and a blunt statement along the lines of “Sorry, you’re out of luck if you expect to migrate all the folders and data that you’ve lovingly accumulated for years to our brand spanking-new all-singing all-dancing cloud platform.” All done and dusted in four pages, many trees around the planet saved, and printer manufacturer stock dropping because ink supplies are not consumed.

Nokia Prepares for 'Solid' Windows Phone Launch (The Telegraph)
Nokia is set to launch its comeback bid in London tomorrow – the struggling mobile phone manufacturer is likely to unveil three new Windows Phone handsets, running the latest version of the software and aimed at the midrange of the market, as well as new handsets based on its aging Symbian operating system. The new devices will be the first since Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced that the Finnish giant was betting its future of Microsoft’s operating system. But they are unlikely to launch in America this year – the company has already confirmed that it won’t be shipping “in volume” until 2012 – and are also unlikely to contain hardware surprises.

Windows 8 to Increase PC Production Costs (ZDNet)
Microsoft’s new Windows 8 OA 3.0 verification system will add complication and costs for ODMs (Original Device Manufacturers) who create and build PCs for the big name OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). These costs will, undoubtedly, be passed on to us, the consumers.

Microsoft Evangelist Shows What Can be Done With Company’s Developer Tools (ZDNet)
Three years ago at Microsoft India’s satellite Tech Ed conference at Hyderabad, there was a robot on the floor. Named Sam, the robot wasn’t a company product but a side project by Ramaprasanna Chellamuthu. Conveniently known as Rama, Sam was just one of his proof of concept demos done using .Net and Microsoft’s Robotics tools. The robot talks to you, knows you and even sings! The project demonstrates the power of Microsoft Robotics Studio and Microsoft’s Visual Programming Language. The video:

Google Apps L.A. Deployment Delayed by Security Requirements (Channel Insider)
Google's complete implementation of its Google Apps cloud collaboration software for Los Angeles has been delayed due to additional security requirements from the city's police department. When Google scored the Los Angeles contract to provide its Gmail and other applications for Los Angeles' 30,000 municipal employees in December 2009, it marked a watershed win.

What Role Should SharePoint Play in a Comprehensive ECM Strategy (AIIM)
The role of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is well established. Smart companies realize they need to manage their critical assets – both paper based and those that are born digital – to control costs, improve profitability and to maintain compliance efforts. The role of SharePoint in the enterprise is also well established. With 100+ million seats, 50,000+ server licenses sold and over $1 billion in sales, the sheer size and scope of SharePoint coverage is impressive.

Why SharePoint Sucks, Part II (Perspectives on SharePoint)
I am amazed at the popularity and the comments I have received from my original blog post Why SharePoint Sucks. I seemed to have hit a nerve with a number of people and I appreciate your feedback. I want to continue my original thoughts and elaborate further. At the risk of getting lynched, let me say that the majority of people responding and vehemently saying that SharePoint sucks are developers and technical administrators (The IT Crowd). You guys are very smart and talented but I think your focus is wrong and that’s why you don’t like SharePoint.

Optimizing Backup Storage for DPM with SharePoint 2007 (From The Field)
One of my Customers is using DPM to backup multiple SharePoint farms. One of the Farms is still a MOSS 2007 farm. Since the SLA for the farm only requires a backup to be available for a month, they choose only to use a disk based backup, and skip the long term retention of DPM (Moving the data from disk to tape). They used the DPM storage size Calculator in order to determine the amount of disk space they needed.

Taking Screenshots and Extracting Text from Images (Geoff Varosky's Blog)
OneNote has become integral in my day-to-day work. Whether I am doing internal work, work for clients, or, writing a blog. Two of the main features I make use of are OneNote’s screenshot capability, as well as the capability for OneNote to extract text from images. I regularly show people these things, since they seem to be features people are unaware of, so, I thought I would put together a quick blog post about it.

Working with Menus and Navigation Objects in SharePoint Server 2010 (ECM) (MSDN)
You declare horizontal and vertical menu instructions for navigation in XML for the master page. Two classes are used to make navigation work: PortalSiteMapDataSource and PortalSiteMapProvider. The PortalSiteMapProvider object provides the site hierarchy (navigation structure) and monitors the relationship between nodes. The PortalSiteMapDataSource object maps navigation features from the PortalSiteMapProvider and filters navigation elements to determine which are viewable to the user in the horizontal or vertical menus or in breadcrumbs.
