Perspectives: SharePoint and The Gov 2.0 Revolution (CMSWire)
An aging workforce, new worker expectations and an embrace from the Oval Office have put the social computing revolution on a fast track, and SharePoint in a pivotal role, in a market not usually known for being in step with the technological times.

Migrating to SharePoint 2010 – What You Need to Know (ITNewsAfrica)
As Microsoft’s SharePoint Solution has matured over the last decade, more and more organisations have implemented SharePoint to make use of the Enterprise Content Management and Collaboration capabilities to overcome the obstacles of collaborating and sharing structured and unstructured data. The recent release of SharePoint 2010 means that many of these organisations will be looking to migrate from the older versions to the new release – something that is not as easy as one might expect, mainly due to content migration issues.

How Social Tools in SharePoint 2010 Encourage Engagement and Innovation (CMSWire)
Much has been written on SharePoint’s new social tools: MySites, activity feeds, tags, notes and others. However, adoption of these features is poor and many organizations lack an understanding of how the tools can actually provide them with tangible benefits and save them money. There are a number of both technical and non-technical points that create a compelling argument for the adoption of SharePoint’s new social features.

More Great Office 2010 Features for Business (BusinessWeek)
Most of us by now are familiar with all the obviously new parts of Office 2010, such as the revised Ribbon, the Backstage document view, Paste preview, and Outlook's Conversation view. But many of the really powerful changes in Office 2010 go far beyond cosmetic -- they're functional, under-the-hood improvements aimed squarely at people who use Office in a business context. Here, then, is a rundown of some key new features in Office 2010 aimed at people who use Office to make their work not just easier, but possible.

Windows 8 is Enough? Microsoft OS Family Gets Confusing (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft suddenly has more Windows than a skyscraper. Is Windows 8 just the newest member of a sprawling OS family that's growing too big too fast? With leaked slides igniting rumblings about Windows 8 this week, it dawned on me how much the Windows operating system family is expanding. Microsoft's goal is clear: cover an increasingly diverse hardware landscape.

Only Microsoft and Red Hat Have All the Pieces to Build Clouds, Red Hat Says (NetworkWorld)
Red Hat has come up with an interesting sales pitch that seems to benefit rival Microsoft as much as Red Hat. At last week's Red Hat Summit in Boston, Red Hat company executives repeatedly said that only two IT vendors have all the software necessary to build an entire cloud, and allow workloads to move from one cloud to another. And those two companies are Microsoft and Red Hat.

Microsoft Kills Kin Phone (InformationWeek)
Microsoft said Wednesday it has stopped work on the Kin to focus "exclusively" on Windows Phone 7, the company's new smartphone operating system that's scheduled to ship later this year. The Kin was built and promoted to attract a younger, social networking-oriented audience. "We are integrating our Kin team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from Kin into future Windows Phone releases," the company said in a statement emailed to InformationWeek.

Licensing Requirements for InfoPath Forms on SharePoint (SharePoint eLearning)
I have been asked enough times now about the licensing requirements of SharePoint to be able to show InfoPath forms in the browser that I’m finally putting together this blog entry about it  . With InfoPath 2010, you can create SharePoint Form Library Forms, SharePoint List Forms and SharePoint Workflow Forms. Let me try to break down each of these briefly and talk about the licensing requirements.

Load Testing Reveals Cause of SharePoint Server Performance Problem (SharePoint Magazine)
A New System’s Poor Performance: Although it seems obvious that adding hardware resources to a system should provide improved performance, a customized Microsoft Office SharePoint® Server (MOSS) website cluster showed the opposite in recent testing for a customer. Load testing with 200 simulated users gave disappointing results, with page durations between 10 and 30 seconds, and the system handling only about four pages per second. Curiously, reducing the cluster to a single SharePoint® server improved the performance.

Validate Email Addresses and Phone Numbers in SharePoint 2007 (Screencast) (End User SharePoint)
In SharePoint 2010, setting up validation for columns is now baked right into the product, on the Add New Column screen, but how do you do it in SharePoint 2007?  Common types of fields that need to have patterns are phone numbers and social security numbers.  Validation is the process of setting up a pattern that column data needs to match before the form can be submitted.  In this screencast, Laura Rogers shows how easy it is to set up validation in a custom form data view web part, using SharePoint Designer.  The prerequisite for this screencast is the one called Customize Form Pages in SharePoint (Screencast).
