The 'SharePoint and <insert technology here> ' Strategy (CMS Wire)
The Law of the Instrument states "…if the only tool you have is a hammer, you treat everything as if it were a nail." When you examine the content management world's zeitgeist, the tool that has all the buzz is the shiny hammer of SharePoint. Yes, SharePoint, a fascinating "free product" that supports an $8 billion a year — and growing — ecosystem. By fully embracing Microsoft enterprise site licenses, IT administrators have used SharePoint to justify stable budgets for IT and doubled down their bets on on-premise software. I admit, there is some appeal in having a single vendor to work with, a single price to pay and being able to physically hug your server, should you so choose. But given the benefits of cloud computing like redundancy, cost savings and speed of deployment, is it worth the trade off? Is SharePoint really the only strategy you need?

BPOS to Office 365 Transitions Start in September 2011 (Softpedia)
Office 365 is the Redmond company’s Cloud-based productivity suite and the evolution of BPOS. In fact, all services packed under the BPOS brand umbrella are also found under Office 365, along with some new additions. The software giant is gearing up to work closely with existing BPOS customers in order to ensure that the migration to Office 365 will be as smooth as possible.

The Senseless Panic Over Microsoft Office 15 (InfoWorld)
Once again, the blogosphere is atwitter over something stupid. Early last week it was over the "report" that Internet Explorer users had lower IQs than users of other browsers -- which turned out to be a hoax that produced endless pontificating. Then as the week progressed it was the shocking "news" that Microsoft Office 15 will switch to HTML5 and JavaScript, making all your line-of-business applications obsolete. Wrong again!

Lightning Strikes Cloud: Amazon, MS Downed (The Register)
Microsoft has been left reeling again after another BPOS crash but at least on this occasion it was not alone, as Amazon's EC2 web services were also downed by the same act of God in Europe. A bolt of lightning struck a transformer at a power utility provider in Dublin, causing an explosion that took down the back-systems last night for the region. Amazon admitted to having issues at 7pm last night and told users via its service health dashboard that under such circumstances, a power cut would usually be "seamlessly picked up by backup generators".

Can Mango Save Windows Phone 7? (ConceivablyTech)
Microsoft has lost yet another quarter in the U.S. smartphone platform battle. According to Comscore, Microsoft gave up 1.7 market share points between March and June 2011. For Microsoft, Mango can’t come soon enough. Microsoft has only 5.8% market share left in the U.S., down from 7.5% at the end of the first quarter. Google is leading the market with a new record high of 40.1%, (+5.4 points), followed by Apple with 26.6% (+1.1 points) and RIM with 23.4% (-3.7 points). Windows Phone 7 has missed its mark so far and the hopes now rest on the Mango 7.5 update as well as the deal with Nokia, which has agreed to feature Windows Phone 7.5 on its future devices to reverse the trend and help Microsoft gain market share.

Microsoft's, Google's Big Data Plans Give IT an Edge (SearchCloudComputing)
CIOs are looking to pull actionable information from ultra-large data sets, or big data. But big data can mean big bucks for many companies. Public cloud providers could make the big data dream more of a reality. Big data, which is measured in terabytes or petabytes, often is comprised of Web server logs, product sales, data, and social network and messaging data. Of the 3,000 CIOs interviewed in IBM's Essential CIO study, 83% listed an investment in business analytics as the top priority. And according to Gartner, by 2015, companies that have adopted big data and extreme information management will begin to outperform unprepared competitors by 20% in every available financial metric.

Is Facial-Recognition Software the Next Security Threat? (Enterprise Security Today)
What if you could identify strangers and get access to their personal information, maybe even their Social Security numbers, by using face-recognition software and social -media profiles? It's possible, according to a new study by Carnegie Mellon University's Alessandro Acquisti. He shared the results of his study Thursday at the Black Hat conference. His revelation comes at a time when Facebook is already under fire for its facial-recognition features. Germany claims the photo-tagging system violates both German and European privacy laws.

"Making decisions is easy. Making decisions that people will support is not so easy." - Peter Block, Flawless Consulting. We all have our holding patterns around found objects -- whether it's unmarked currency, unclaimed winnings, or uneaten popcorn from the last showing. As managers of findability it helps to anticipate what kinds of intentions our users have in store for their to-do lists once the keywords, click-throughs, and downloads have played out.

Stale Managed Metadata Databases in SharePoint 2010 (Wictor Wilén)
This is a short story about how you can get and resolve stale Managed Metadata Service (MMS) databases in SharePoint 2010. I've been working with Managed Metadata quite much and done some backup/restore juggling from production to test and to dev environments. Which by the way works really smooth. I've also recreated the MMS databases a couple of times.  After applying Service Pack and the re-released June 2011 CU I went into Central Administration to take a look at the databases and their upgrade status. This is what I found: four MMS databases, of which two didn't upgrade, and I only have two MMS service applications in this particular environment.

Web Parts in Content with Master Pages Without the Form Tag? No Problem! (Waldek Mastykarz)
Removing the form runat=server tag from the Master Page is one of the ways to optimize Internet-facing websites built on the SharePoint 2010 platform. Unfortunately it also means losing some functionality such as Web Parts in content. Find out how to combine minimal Master Page markup with Web Parts in content.

5 Lessons I’ve Learned About How to Create Memorable and Useful SharePoint Governance Plans (NetworkWorld)
I feel like I've worked on a gazillion SharePoint governance plans - or at least half that many - and each time, I think the latest one is the best one. I've definitely learned that the 80-page governance plan document is just that - a document. It doesn't actually help govern a SharePoint deployment, much less provide any type of guidance to SharePoint users. Here are 5 of the lessons I've learned about creating useful and memorable governance plans.

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: Programmatically Create Term Sets & Metadata Columns in the Managed Metadata Service Application (SharePoint 2010)
An article on Microsoft TechNet defines managed metadata as being "a hierarchical collection of centrally managed terms that you can define, and then use as attributes for items in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010," and I would argue that it's the most important new feature packaged in SharePoint Server 2010. It provides a central storage space for keywords, an enterprise management of metadata terms, and a content type for SharePoint 2010. Creating term sets using the browser is very straightforward thanks to the Term Store Management Tool. However, the Tool does have some limitations. It doesn't provide a way to include multiple language translations for tags or synonyms, and it doesn't merge terms into an existing taxonomy. Microsoft has implemented a fantasy application programming interface (API) that developers can use to create and manage taxonomies (types of terms).
