SharePoint App Store: Should Microsoft Vet Contents? (CMSWire)
Rumors and conjecture have circulated about a possible SharePoint App store since the release of SharePoint 2010. A number of independent attempts currently exist, though they amount to little more than website catalogs. An official app store was thought to be part of Microsoft's launch plans for SharePoint 2010, but it is believed that logistical and technical issues prevented it from becoming a reality. With the success of the iOS version and official plans for a Windows 8 store, it's almost certain we will see something soon for SharePoint.
Our Office 365 Experience: Part 2, The Migration (RedmondMag)
To migrate from Google Apps to Office 365, we decided to try a third-party migration tool. We'd been asked to write a competitive analysis of the available migration options, including the built-in one (which is mainly suitable for migrating from an Exchange Server), so this seemed like a good time to try the options. The process went off perfectly, using a self-service option that cost just $10/mailbox and let our users handle their own migrations simply by entering their old and new passwords into a Web page. Mailbox migrations can take a long, long time. Had we been smarter, we might have opted for an admin-controlled migration rather than the user self-service, because the tool would have enabled us to filter out all the old trash content that Google was hanging on to. As-is, we discovered that Office 365 starts applying bandwidth throttles after a few thousand messages are added to your inbox, meaning each mailbox took almost a full day to migrate. We later learned that office 365 support can suspend those throttles during a migration if you give them a call.
Prepare Your Windows 7 Desktop PC for Windows 8 Now! (BetaNews)
The new Metro user interface will make Windows 8 a totally different experience for XP, Vista and 7 users, but it will especially challenge those of us who use a desktop PC. Why? Because we are accustomed to mouse input and Windows 8 emphasizes touch. Metro is much better suited to touch than the mouse. So how can desktop users today, prepare themselves for when they later upgrade to Windows 8? I'll tell you.
Microsoft Carried by Enterprise Customers (ZDNet)
Microsoft’s Windows 7 may seem like a has-been in the lead-up to Windows 8 in the second half of 2012, but the corporate upgrade cycle continues for the software giant. In fact, Microsoft’s enterprise businesses are carrying the company. Although Microsoft’s Windows revenue was sluggish in its fiscal second quarter last week, there were a bevy of bright spots. Among them:
Windows Phone 'Won't Have New Technologies Until They're a Benefit' (TechRadar)
Is Windows Phone falling behind on hardware without dual core and NFC? Just having the specs doesn't make a good experience, Microsoft's Aaron Woodman told us at CES. "If you look at Android, you see the greatest time to market advantage, just because there's greater flexibility in some of what the OEMs can do, but it doesn't always execute as great quality. The first several dual core devices actually didn't even use the second core.
A Year of Transition for Microsoft and Intel (CNNMoney)
Both Microsoft and Intel are still money-making machines--they raked in $20.9 billion and $13.9 billion, respectively, in quarterly earnings announced on Wednesday. But their core businesses are increasingly under threat because they're largely dependent on demand for desktops and laptops. According to recent numbers from research firm Gartner, global PC shipments declined 1.4% in the last quarter of 2011. As more and more people use smartphones and tablets as their primary access to the Internet, that trend isn't likely to change (even after the industry recovers from the effects of the flooding in Thailand and financial shakiness in Europe).

Programmatically Configuring Menu Items in SharePoint 2010 Revisited (Waldek Mastykarz)
A while ago I wrote about how you can programmatically configure menu items in SharePoint 2010 using PowerShell. Unfortunately it turns out that it doesn’t always the way you would expect it to. Find out how to get the script working in your SharePoint environment. Being able to programmatically configure menu items is an quite important part of structured and repeatable deployment. Particularly if you’re building and deploying frequently, configuring navigation can save you quite some time and make it easier for you to run automated tests.
Initial Topology Planning: Site Collections vs. Subsites (SharePoint 365)
Should I configure my intranet using a single site collection and multiple sub sites or a use multiple site collections? There are huge pros and cons for each scenario, all of which should be seriously considered as you plan out your site. This choice will directly affect your topology and governance model as well. To clarify, a site collection is a collection of sites, it has at least one site, but can have many. A site collection cannot have another site collection under it. A web application has a collection of site collections. Site collections are considered equals in a web application, there is no site collection hierarchy.
Building Social Intranets (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
Intranet Portals are often sooooo boring. They start out as dry static places with official snippet of words from the CEO or a vision statement, and a few stale articles and links scattered in mega menus. Ultimately users turn to search or simply click on their links that they hope don't move around too much. Social Networks are these fresh places where employees engage with each other. They are the new IM and Chat conversations and those that adopt them can't live without them, but others see it as a waste of time… What work is being done? What good can come of it? The conversation is COMPLETELY unstructured.
Adding Your Profile Picture on Office 365 (SharePointEduTech)
I have been using Office 365 since the beta and we also purchased an E1 subscription on its release but it was only today that I finally got around to taking a look at My site and configuring my profile this is partly to do with my using Harmon.ie but more about that later. So I was very surprised to find that there was no link available to change my profile picture OOTB out of the box or should that be OOTC out of the cloud! Well a bit of digging around provided me with the answer so I thought I would share it with others through the blog. As you can see from the image below there is no link to change the profile picture.

Ricardo Munoz Introduces STP Buenos Aires (The Bamboo Team Blog)
With thanks to our host Microsoft -whose Buenos Aires office served as the launching pad for STP South America- the first event of the tour is currently underway and has already been a great success. We've been honored with a great turnout from the local Argentine SharePoint community, and on a summertime Saturday morning at that. In addition to the native-English-speaking STP contingent, local speakers Fernando Hunth, Mauricino Grimberg, and Ariel Garcia will join STP's own Ricardo Munoz in presenting afternoon sessions in the local tongue of Buenos Aires. Sadly, I will not be able to cover those sessions since they'll be presented in Spanish.
Joel Oleson’s ‘Social Intranets: Transforming Traditional Portals’ at STP Buenos Aires (The Bamboo Team Blog)
With his stated mission of addressing "how we can make SharePoint more social" in his STP Buenos Aires session, Joel Oleson leveraged his extensive knowledge of both SharePoint and consumer social networking products. As well, Joel brought to the table his recent experience as Solutions Manager at the LDS Church, where he's been transforming the corporate SharePoint 2010 intranet since his arrival in April of last year.
Mark Miller’s ‘To Host or Not to Host: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Decisions’ at STP Buenos Aires (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Fpweb.net's Director of Global Strategy and Senior Storyteller Mark Miller opened his STP Buenos Aires session with an example of his perception of what's happening between competitors in the SharePoint hosting space. Mark's representation of the relationship between competitors in the space took the form of a clip from the spaghetti western classic The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, as three gunmen size each other up in a drawn-out scene before the gunplay ultimately begins. Mark's stated goal for the session was to "examine the different models for SharePoint hosting," and he allowed that "in every model there will be some good, some bad, and some ugly."
