The Art of SharePoint Success: Strategy - SharePoint as an Information & Knowledge Management Infrastructure (CMSWire)
This is article seven in the series exploring the Art of SharePoint Success, a framework for achieving long term business benefits from investments in SharePoint-based change initiatives. There are four elements to the framework: 1.Governance; 2.Strategy; 3.Architecture; 4.Transition. We are discussing the strategy element which began with the question, “What is SharePoint?” I suggested the following answer: SharePoint is a set of integrated technologies which provide a platform upon which an organization can build a flexible, long-term information and knowledge management infrastructure. The past two articles have explored the concepts of SharePoint as a set of integrated technologies, as an application development platform and the nature of infrastructure. This month we are going to wrap up the definition of SharePoint by looking at the idea that SharePoint is all about information and knowledge management.

Microsoft Azure Gets an Open Source Rival (InforWorld)
With Microsoft's Windows Azure striving for greater relevance and adoption, a relatively unknown vendor, Tier 3, is providing a cloud alternative for Microsoft .Net applications. Tier 3 is using EMC VMware's open source code as the basis of its offering, which opens the door for direct competition between VMware and Microsoft for .Net cloud workloads in the future.

Office 365 Advisor: What Plan's for Me? (WindowsITPro)
Microsoft has released a new advisor (a web-based wizard) to help companies figure out whether there’s a right Office 365 for them and if so, what is the recommended plan. The cynic in me says that there will always be an Office 365 for everyone, just like Santa Claus comes to every child who has behaved themselves during the preceding year. Leaving cynicism aside, let’s applaud Microsoft for providing some help while wondering at the same time whether they could have just simplified the array of plans and options that they offer for Office 365.

Before You Join the Cloud, Ask Yourself 'Why?' (ITBusinessEdge)
If the choice had to be made today, would you go with a public, private or hybrid cloud? That's a tough one to field at this point considering the technology is still evolving and the use cases for each approach are still open to debate. However, with demand for scale-out and on-demand services on the rise, enterprises will be under the gun to provide them regardless of the unknowns.

Microsoft Could Have Rocked Mobile in 2011 with the Xphone (ZDNet)
Windows Phone 7 is the best product Microsoft has built in a very long time. Of course, building a great product — it could even be the best product in its category — never guarantees success. Microsoft benefited from that dynamic in the 1980s and 1990s when its operating systems were never the best software on the market but prevailed as the dominant platform in personal computing. Timing, key partnerships, sales savvy, even geography can play an important role in a product winning a big share of the market. Oh, and one other factor: branding. I’d argue that the number one factor that has torpedoed Windows Phone 7 is branding.

The Web in 2012: Five Predictions, Starting with IE10 (CNET)
After simmering for a few years last decade, the Web has been a frenzy of activity in the last few years. Developers are advancing what can be done, people are spending more time on the Web, and browser makers are locked in intense competition. Broadly speaking, it's easy to see that Web technology will get more important and more sophisticated. But if for some detail, here are my five predictions for what'll happen next year.

Don't Pine for Bill Gates, Microsoft Fans (Time)
Putting the kibosh on one of 2011′s biggest non-stories, Bill Gates has said he isn’t going to return to full-time work at Microsoft. Thank heavens. His current gig as a philanthropist matters far more than anything he might do to nudge Windows Phone in the right direction or get Windows 8 off to a good start. (I’m convinced that when the world remembers Gates in a century or two, his philanthropy will be the first thing that comes to mind; Microsoft will be the second career that also deserves a mention.)

SharePoint for Your Internet Site - Why it Really Does Make Sense! (EndUserSharePoint)
Let’s be honest, there has been some negativity around Microsoft SharePoint’s ability to deliver complex enterprise websites, with the main issues cited as depth of feature set around Web Content Management (WCM). Specific criticisms have been raised within the following areas: Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and digital marketing features; Accessibility and compliance; Web Part framework.

User-Generated Taxonomies will Make or Break SharePoint (AIIM)
The less control or governance you put in place over a system, the more likely end users are to embrace that system – and make a mess of it. That's the problem with cheap (free), web-based tools with cool features and viral natures. People find them, start using them to solve small problems, and then suddenly it's become a "production" system in your organization, people are relying upon it for key business processes, and someone high up the executive ladder asks (demands) the IT team to now support it.

Administrative Roles in SharePoint Online and Office 365 (Get the Point)
The first time you setup Office 365, you may look at all the options -- Lync, Exchange, and SharePoint, for example -- and wonder... Exactly how am I securing this? That's the second thing that occurred to me. Or you may have another common question: 'When I'm adding  users to Office 365, am I also adding to SharePoint'? I remember wondering about this as I first clicked to add users to Office 365. The answer to that question is No. A good No, not a bad No.

SharePoint: How the Career Centre Mobile Site was Built (SharePointDevWiki)
I’ve recently had the pleasure of working on a large public facing portal solution for the Career Centre. I came onto the project midway through so I inherited a lot of branding and functionality, however early enough to create a number of components from scratch, having an input into the design and implementation decisions along the way. One such piece of functionality was the mobile site which can be accessed on your phones by clicking the link above, or in your browsers by accessing the mobile site directly.
