SharePoint at the Crossroads (CMSWire)
As you would expect, Microsoft is being predictably tight-lipped about the next release of SharePoint, but that doesn’t mean we’re not all anxiously awaiting SharePoint 2013/14. In January 2012, two years after the release of 2010 and five years after the release of MOSS, dynamic document management is at an interesting crossroads.

The Role of the Business Analyst in SharePoint (AIIM)
One of the most underappreciated (in my estimation) roles in IT is the Business Analyst, and yet it should be one of the most critical functions in your organization. Within many companies, a BA is viewed as being junior to project managers, with all BA's aspiring to the PM role. This should not be the case -- the BA and PM are two very different roles, and at some companies, the BA is a much more senior function. I've spent a good portion of my career managing PM and BA teams, spinning up project management organizations (PMOs), and working with both as an outside consultant. The roles are distinct, the skill sets are different.

Microsoft's Cloud Roadmap for 2012: What's on Tap (ZDNet)
Microsoft hasn’t been willing to share publicly its roadmaps for its Windows Azure and Office 365 cloud offerings for the past year-plus. But it seems the Softies have been sharing some details privately with a select few. I recently had a chance to take a peek at a version of the “Future of Windows Azure” roadmap, a snippet of which I included in a post on January 2 about Microsoft’s plans for a persistent virtual machine (VM) capability, which will allow Linux, SharePoint and SQL Server to run virtually on Azure. In today’s post, I’m covering more details of what’s in store through the spring of 2012, according to the roadmap.

A Windows Phone-CES Post Mortem (Redmond Developer News)
I attend the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to follow and cover Microsoft, both in terms of its announcements at the show, and those of its competitors. From that standpoint, and since Microsoft announced that this year’s CES would be its last, I attended again this year and I think it was the best CES Microsoft’s had since I started attending. But the reasons for that are unexpected and surprising. Let me give you a little more context and explain why.

The Desktop PC Is Dead--Long Live the Desktop (PCWorld)
The tower desktop is finished. It had a long run, and has survived all kinds of threats--laptops, gaming consoles, netbooks, countless pundits like myself proclaiming its end. But seriously this time: it’s done. And ironically, the tower desktop got put down by a PC that actually sits on top of your desk.

O365/SPO + Azure + AuthN - Critical Path Training's Office365 AuthN Helper Library (Andrew Connell)
In this last post in my Office365/SharePoint Online + Windows Azure + Authorization blog series, I want to introduce a little helper project I am using. To make life easier I created a little O365 authorization helper library that does a lot of the heavy lifting for you. It covers two of the three things I outlined in my series as workarounds. Code samples I show in this post were taken from a code sample CPT's Office365/SharePoint Online Claims Authentication Helper Library… you can get the code from the Critical Path Training site’s Members section… look in the Code Samples section.

Easy Reporting off of SharePoint Data (SharePoint911)
Yes, it’s sometimes tedious installing and setting up SQL Server Reporting Services on your SharePoint server… but that’s not what this presentation is about.  In this presentation at the Birmingham SharePoint user group meeting, I showed that once SSRS is in place, it is easy to create reports based off of SharePoint list data.  Here is the list of demos that I do, with all the reports being based off of a SharePoint task list:

How to: Add Words to the Spell Check Dictionary in SharePoint 2010 (EndUserSharePoint)
As corporate intranets and extranets evolve, more content is coming out of documents and are living in some other form such as lists, or as page content. The shift to using page content to dissemenate information, and be stored as metadata, is particularly on the rise. This can pose a variety of challenges for the business, like how to manage branding assets within the rich text editor and to make it easier for users to submit content....but that topic is for another day.

Using SharePoint BCS in the Cloud - Surfacing CRUD Data with WCF and Office 365: Part 1 (SharePointDevWiki)
If you have ever read any of my blog posts before, you know it comes with a story, a business case if you will and usually will demonstrate something you can take into the real world. In this example you will learn how to create a fully CRUD External Content Type (ECT) from a WCF that has methods to support that action. You will then see exactly how to configure and set up your SharePoint Online (Office 365) Site to support connectivity, and consumption of the WCF service and finally return an External List from the ECT that will be placed in SharePoint Online.

Agents of Change (AIIM)
I’ll be speaking at AIIM 2012 (San Francisco. March 20-22.) Part of what I’ll be talking about during my session has to do with changing behavior. Below is a little insight into that session; “Expand, Unlearn, and Ignore” on Wednesday, March 21 at 11:30 a.m. Like what you see? Check out my presentation (and the others) at www.aiimconference.com; and register today, I hope to meet you in San Francisco.
