5 Critical Steps to SharePoint Information Architecture Planning (CMSWire)
If you want to successfully implement SharePoint in your organization, then you need to clearly define and manage your information architecture (IA). There are a number of things you need to do to define your SharePoint IA and here are five critical steps to ensure you are on the right track. Information Architecture in SharePoint: The best way to think about information architecture is that it’s a blueprint, a way to organize your information so it’s easy to find by the right people. And while SharePoint isn’t the only platform that is in need of a well-defined IA, it is one, that if badly defined, can cause more information silos and frustrated employees than you can even imagine.
Windows 8 -- From a Gas Engine to Hybrid! (BetaNews)
What does Windows 8 really look like under the hood? Is Metro a totally new direction for the Windows API? What does this really mean for software development? As a programmer I like to know how things work under the hood. I am also a decent backyard mechanic, and I look at automobiles the same way. People who work on cars may have spent years learning how a gas engine works, but what happens when they finally have to work on a hybrid? The difference between a gas engine and a hybrid engine are like night and day. I believe we are seeing something similar with Windows too!
Windows Phone 8 Preview (Supersite for Windows)
Thanks to a recent leak which has revealed some interesting information about the next major Windows Phone version, I can now publicly discuss Windows Phone 8 for the first time. Windows Phone 8, codenamed Apollo, will be based on the Windows 8 kernel and not on Windows CE as are current versions. This will not impact app compatibility: Microsoft expects to have over 100,000 Windows Phone 7.5-compatible apps available by the time WP8 launches, and they will all work fine on this new OS.
Products + Social = Better Products (Smart Data Collective)
I believe that we’re still in the era of a “horseless carriage” version of social media: we added a motor, but kept the rest of the carriage. In other words, while we understand how the new technologies work, we’re still tending to bolt the new social techniques onto our existing processes, rather than fundamentally rethinking those processes in the light of the new opportunities.
Is there an ROI in Your Cloud Strategy (AIIM)
Is a cloud-based collaboration system in your strategy but those pesky accounting people want an ROI study? A content information management (CIM) system may be more difficult to calculate the ROI due to a number of factors:
Pot (Microsoft) Calls Kettle (Google) Black on Privacy (Search Engine Watch)
Did you know Microsoft truly puts people first? Instead of having horrible, evil products like Gmail, Google’s search engine, Google Docs, or Google’s Chrome browser, Microsoft saves us with Hotmail, Bing, Microsoft Office 365, and Internet Explorer 9. That’s the gist of a new Microsoft ad blitz (and also a blog post) from one of Google’s biggest rivals, Microsoft (image below). The ads are appearing in newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA Today.

SharePoint 2010 Development – A Beginner's Guide Part One (SharePoint 365)
Well well well, look what’s happened, I have spent quite some time threatening to get into SharePoint Development and a few weeks ago I decided I would make some effort to get things going and with that in mind, of course, I wanted to share my thoughts and my journey. I welcome posts from any devs expanding on some of the topics I might bring up or even correcting things I have done wrong, as after all, this is how I will learn and it will help anyone reading these posts.
15 Considerations for SharePoint Online Office 365 (EndUserSharePoint)
First, let me qualify the below by saying that “this is accurate at the time the blog post is written”… ok now that we got that out of the way. Second, the information below is compiled from my experiences (I've done a few Office 365 (SharePoint Online) projects to date) information I have garnered from esteemed SharePoint/Office 365 Experts, and guidance from TechNet & MSDN. In fact for an exhaustive list of guidance on Office365 I recommend you go here Office 365 for Enterprise Service Descriptions and pull down all the information you will need on Exchange, Office, Lync and SharePoint.
Web Sensitive Files and SharePoint 2010 (ITPro)
Recently, I had someone approach me with an issue of not being able to upload swf file types into a document library. Normally, I would not have seen this issue but we have a group of designers who are using a SharePoint instance at my company in a pretty novel way incorporating some of the ratings and tagging features of SharePoint into their design processes; which explains why they needed to be able to upload swf files into a SharePoint document library. After researching TechNet I found the cause of the issue. But it did not provide me with a precise answer as to how to alleviate it. So, I was able to use a blog post on exchange-help.com, to put together the elements for a solution.
An Obscure “Failed to Create the Configuration Database” Issue… (Clever Workarounds)
You would think that after years of installing SharePoint in various scenarios, that I would be able to get past step 3 in the configuration wizard (the step that creates the configuration database). But today I almost got nailed by an issue that – while in hindsight is dead-set obvious – was rather difficult to diagnose. Basically it was a straightforward two server farm installation. The installer account had local admin rights on the web front end server and sysadmin rights on the SQL box. SQL was a dedicated named instance using an alias. I was tutoring the install while an engineer did the driving and as soon as we hit step 3, blammo! – the Installation failed claiming that the configuration database could not be created.

Activating SharePoint 2010 Sandboxed Solutions by Using Code (Wrox) (MSDN)
The sandboxed solution is a new feature in SharePoint 2010 that enables developers to create SharePoint 2010 functionality that runs in a separate memory space called a "sandbox." The code in the solution runs in the sandbox, and any problems in the code remain isolated and do not cause the SharePoint web application in which it is running to stop responding. In previous versions of SharePoint, developers had to add their assemblies to the global assembly cache (GAC) or to the in folder of the SharePoint virtual directory.
