SharePoint is a 'Document Coffin', says IBM (ComputerWorld)
IBM had nothing but strong words to say about its competitor Microsoft, at the opening session of this year's Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida. Jeff Schick, vice president of social software at IBM, told the audience of over 1000 developers, clients, and media, that the enterprise content management system (ECM) was good for little beyond storing documents. "Content at rest is expensive, content in motion is valuable," says Schick. "Unfortunately, a lot of CMS today are just expensive vaults. SharePoint is today's document coffin."

Overhauling the Next Version of SharePoint My Sites (CMSWire)
My Sites in SharePoint have always been a divisive subject. Some people love them, others aren’t so keen. SharePoint 2010 brought with it a huge improvement in the features and functionality available in My Sites, and the next version of SharePoint is likely to see a similar leap forward. It would be a big surprise if these "next generation My Sites" didn’t take some directions from the world of social networking — Facebook, Twitter and others.

The Top 10 Tech Priorities of CIOs (ComputerWorld)
Analytics and business intelligence will be the top technology priorities for CIOs this year, according to Gartner Inc.'s annual survey of IT executives. The second most important technology in the survey is mobile, said Gartner, which asked 2,335 CIOs globally about their business and technology priorities for the year ahead. The CIOs, who were surveyed in the fourth quarter of 2011, control $321 billion worth of IT spending in 45 countries. The survey also found that IT budgets globally will be essentially flat, but with much variation regionally.

Microsoft Confirms Dave Cutler, Father of Windows NT, Now Working on Xbox (ZDNet)
Four years ago, Microsoft assembled a team, many with killer Windows pedigrees, to build Microsoft’s public-cloud operating system, Windows Azure (codenamed “Red Dog.”) On the all-star roster were folks like Dave Cutler, the father of Windows NT, and Hoi Vo, an expert in hypervisor development, among others. A while back I got a tip that Cutler wasn’t doing a whole lot on the Azure front any more, since the core platform was basically “done.” He was still at Microsoft, and currently reporting directly to CEO Steve Ballmer. But word was he had moved onto new challenges.

Windows 8 Tablets: Making the OS Matter (PC Magazine)
What has a 1,366-by-768-pixel screen with a minimum of five touch inputs; at least one USB 2.0 port; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; a three-axis accelerometer; power, rotation lock, and volume buttons; 10GB or more of free storage space when taken out of the box; and a Windows key button measuring at least 10.5mm in diameter in the center of the bottom bezel? It's a Windows 8 tablet meeting Microsoft's recently released specifications, which include a new keyboardless version (Windows button plus power button) of the familiar Ctrl-Alt-Del sequence—for domain login, Microsoft is quick to insist, not for rebooting a crashed system.

Will Microsoft Buy RIM or Nokia? (The Guardian)
The idea has been kicked around for at least five years. Days after the iPhone's introduction in January 2007, Seeking Alpha suggested that the Xbox maker ought to buy RIM in order to build an XPhone. In retrospect, this would have saved both companies a lot of grief. It's early 2007 and the BlackBerry maker is riding high. With its Microsoft Exchange integration; a solid PIM (personal information manager) that neatly combines mail, calendar, and contacts; and the secure BlackBerry Messenger network, the "CrackBerry" is rightly perceived as the best smartphone on the market.

Major Collaboration / Social Platforms Coming Up Short on Business Applications (PRWeb)
The Real Story Group released Version 4.0 of The Enterprise Collaboration and Social Software Report this week. Heavyweight collaboration and social computing platforms from major vendors frequently disappoint business users seeking more polished, out-of-the-box Enterprise 2.0 applications, according to the latest reviews from The Real Story Group, an independent analyst firm that evaluates enterprise and web technologies.

Feature Upgrade: Better to go for Full Solution Deployment or for Solution Upgrade? (SharePointDevWiki)
There are already a lot of debates on the web regarding the best strategy when it comes to solution deployment. The main topic is always Solution Upgrade (which I’ll refer to as SU) or Solution Retract/Delete/Add/Deploy (which I’ll refer further to as FSD). Back in the days of 2007, those debates were already present but at that time, FSD often won the battle and there weren't many people envisioning seriously working with SU.

Meta: Attributes in Page Layouts Provisioned by Features are Unghosted (Customized) (Elumenotion)
One of my clients was having an issue where solution upgrade or redeployment didn't change certain page layouts. I checked the CustomizedPageStatus property of the affected layouts and it said they are customized. However, they had not actually been customized. I activated the problem feature in another environment. Much to my surprise, the particular layouts indicated that they were customized immediately based on the provisioning for the module!
