SharePoint 2010 Collaboration ISVs Focus on Workflow, Analytics (SearchContentManagement)
With 125 million licenses sold, Microsoft’s SharePoint is the market leader for enterprise collaboration, but it doesn’t solve every business problem for every user. Instead, many SharePoint 2010 collaboration platform users rely on a host of independent software vendors (ISVs) to handle what SharePoint can't.

10 Planning and Governance Keys to SharePoint Success (CMSWire)
In his keynote address at the SharePoint Conference in Anaheim, CA earlier this month, Microsoft CVP Jeff Teper, who many in the community refer to as the "Godfather of SharePoint," stated that governance "is not an issue in SharePoint 2010." That claim caused a bit of a stir from the audience, and Twitter was suddenly jammed with feedback and speculation.

Analysis: With Antitrust Decree Gone, Microsoft Again Tying Browser Tightly To Windows (CRN)
For more than a decade, Microsoft lived under constraints of a consent decree with the U.S. government that, essentially, led the company to allow for “unbundling” of its Web browsing software from its flagship Windows operating system. The final remnants of that decree lapsed earlier this year, and now Microsoft is wasting little time in returning to its past strategy: A pre-release version of Windows 8 shows an OS that is deeply intertwined with Internet Explorer 10, with it impossible to uninstall the browser from the OS at this point in Microsoft’s development process.

Windows 8: Microsoft's Game-Changing Technology (RedmondMag)
I have to be honest with you: For about the past year, I've had some serious doubts about Microsoft's place in the technology world. Don't misunderstand me, Microsoft has many fantastic products and technologies, but with the shift to the cloud (and fears of outsourcing for IT pros) and Microsoft not gaining share fast enough in very important areas (mobility, virtualization, etc.), I was beginning to question Microsoft's place as well as my place in the Microsoft ecosystem. But then something happened: I saw Windows Server 8.

Nokia Windows Phones Won’t Hit U.S. Shores Until Early 2012 (BGR)
Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop took the stage at Nokia World on Tuesday and unveiled the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, the company’s first Windows Phone devices. Unfortunately, however, the Finnish phone maker said neither phone will land in the United States this year. Instead, U.S. residents will have to wait until “early 2012″ for Nokia to introduce a “portfolio of products” for the U.S.

Mozilla, Microsoft Debut Bing-ed Firefox (ComputerWorld)
Just weeks before Mozilla's lucrative contract with Google comes up for renewal, the open-source developer launched a customized version of Firefox that uses rival Microsoft's Bing search engine. Microsoft also touted the new Firefox, saying that it had teamed with Mozilla because users "told us to make it even easier to use Bing in Firefox."

Proselyte, or How I Learned to Manage SharePoint Debt (AIIM)
I have a professional crush. Gary Hewett of Technical Magic manages the infrastructure of a well-known records and information management group.  I’ve had the privilege of working with him for the past year and a half. Simply put, he is an incredible teacher. Together we plunged deep into the concept of agile software development.  You know how we Records folk like to discuss navigating the sensitive waters of the information technology mindset?  Thanks to him, my view on information technology, records best practices and project management has matured quickly.

The SharePoint Timer Service (Beside the Point)
As a single unified logical entity, a SharePoint farm requires a mechanism to run tasks necessary to provide its services. These tasks include updating components of the farm such as servers and services, and updating data and configuration in farm databases. To run these tasks, SharePoint provides its own scheduled tasks management service, manifested as Timer Service instances installed on every SharePoint server in the farm. If the Timer Service or any of its instances on servers begins to malfunction, it won't take long for problems to begin appearing across the farm. For all its importance, though, the Timer Service is often misunderstood. In this blog post we'll explore the basic elements and startup process of the SharePoint Timer Service. In the future and as time permits, we'll further explore the Timer Job system and many of the specific Timer Jobs which run in a farm.

Publishing Rich HTML Without Any Limitations in SharePoint 2010 (Waldek Mastykarz)
SharePoint 2010 ships with rich content editing capabilities. However the set of allowed HTML tags is limited. Find out how to avoid the limitations in editing rich content in SharePoint 2010. When working with Internet-facing websites, rich content allows us to make difference and to add interaction and semantics to static pages. Out of the box SharePoint 2010 ships with a Rich Text Editor (RTE) that allows us to enrich our content with HTML markup. Thanks to its interaction with the Ribbon content editors can easily add rich media, data tables or change presentation of the content using the Rich Text Editor.

Call Assessments from Office 365, Authenticating via Active Directory (SharePoint and Assessment Blog)
Integrating with SharePoint Online, the Office 365 version of SharePoint, can be challenging as Microsoft have prevented most server-to-server communication. But SharePoint Online does support Active Directory (AD) authentication using Integrated Windows Authentication, so if your assessment software also supports AD, you have an easy and safe way of authenticating your assessment taker.

EuropeanSP: Workflow Shootout - Nintex vs. K2 vs. Datapolis (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Over 150 attendees turned up to watch the first-ever "Workflow Shootout" at the European SharePoint Conference this past week.  Anticipation for the event was enhanced by the scattering of promotional signs throughout the expo halls.  These signs had a pretty clever design, making it look as if an American-style Old West gun battle was in store for the participants: Datapolis, Nintex, and K2.  The shootout promised to pit three SharePoint workflow providers together on stage to face-off in an unscripted contest of product capabilities.  It didn’t really matter if you were in the market for a workflow tool or not.  The opportunity to possibly witness a train wreck as vendors were forced to step outside the comfort of their canned demo datasets was just too interesting to miss.  So, did the shootout deliver?  Well, that depends on what you wanted to see.  If you went hoping to see a one of the vendors crash his demo server or crack under the pressure of the moment and run offstage in embarrassed tears, then no, you probably wouldn’t say the session delivered.  But in my opinion, the shootout did deliver, and ended up producing some clear winners and losers.

Working with Menus and Navigation Objects in SharePoint Server 2010 (ECM) (MSDN)
You declare horizontal and vertical menu instructions for navigation in XML for the master page. Two classes are used to make navigation work: PortalSiteMapDataSource and PortalSiteMapProvider. The PortalSiteMapProvider object provides the site hierarchy (navigation structure) and monitors the relationship between nodes. The PortalSiteMapDataSource object maps navigation features from the PortalSiteMapProvider and filters navigation elements to determine which are viewable to the user in the horizontal or vertical menus or in breadcrumbs.
