10 SharePoint Security Mistakes You Probably Make (InformationWeek)
How important is it to secure and monitor Microsoft SharePoint? Consider the case of Bradley Manning, the Army intelligence analyst who's accused of leaking 250,000 government cables to WikiLeaks. According to an Army investigator who testified at a hearing to determine if Manning should face a court martial, one of Manning's laptops contained an Excel spreadsheet, containing a tab with multiple Wget scripts--designed to download large numbers of files--that "pointed to a Microsoft SharePoint server" that stored documents for the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base detention facility, reported Wired. The investigator further testified that "he ran the scripts to download the documents, then downloaded the ones that WikiLeaks had published and found they were the same."

Information Architecture - SharePoint's Story (CMSWire)
Consider this: Microsoft has sold over 125 million licenses of SharePoint. It is a multi-billion dollar business. SharePoint is a platform that everyone seems to have, many actually use and most don’t understand how to implement and manage properly. There is no platform more in need of a proper information architecture than SharePoint. But what exactly does that mean?

Microsoft, Please Don't 'Touch' Office 15 (BYTE)
A new version of Windows isn't the only thing in the offing from Microsoft. There's also a new version of Office--and if Microsoft is planning a revamp of Office to match its revamp of Windows, it needs to remember something: Windows 8 might be for tablets, but Office inherently is not. First, the facts, scanty as they are. What little is publicly known about "Office 15" right now comes mostly by way of a blog post by PJ Hough, corporate vice president of development for Microsoft Office. Hints are dropped about this being the most ambitious undertaking yet for the Office division, and how Office is being synchronized with a great many other Microsoft projects that work side-by-side and hand-in-hand with it.

Can Microsoft Save Windows Azure? (RedmondMag)
Microsoft is slowly but surely working to make its Windows Azure cloud platform more palatable to the masses -- though without the benefit of roadmap leaks, it would be hard for most customers to know this. When Microsoft began cobbling together its Windows Azure cloud plans back in 2007, there was a grand architectural plan. In a nutshell, Microsoft wanted to recreate Windows so that Redmond could run users' applications and store their data across multiple Windows Server machines located in Microsoft's (plus a few partners') own datacenters. In the last five years, Microsoft has honed that vision but has never really deviated too far from its original roadmap.

Windows 8 and Metro: The World Without Browser Plug-ins (Dr. Dobb's)
Abandoning plug-ins will make browsers better and coding easier: Browsers exist primarily to display HTML pages, use the internal JavaScript engine to make displayed pages active, and let the user interact with the back-end server. Browsers are limited to HTML/CSS for the user interface and subject to the limitations of HTTP for communication with the server. To offer a better UI and a richer user experience, companies have used plug-ins. A plug-in runs native client-side code and communicates with host browsers using low-level and browser-specific interfaces. Adobe Flash has been the de-facto standard for years, followed by Microsoft Silverlight some three years ago.

IE Fends Off Rivals, but Absent From Mobile Battlefield (CNET)
Among personal computers, IE reclaimed a chunk the global browser usage, rising from 51.9 percent in December to 53 percent in January, according to new statistics from Net Applications. However, while browsing with desktops and laptops dominates, mobile devices are catching up. Smartphones and tablets accounted for an all-time high of 8.8 percent of browsing in January, up from 7.7 percent the month earlier.

Adventures With SharePoint 2010 Security Updates and Troubleshooting PSConfig Errors (ITPro)
Recently we installed some security updates to our SharePoint servers, only to find out later that we were having issues caused by our incorrect application of those updates. The problems surfaced when we were trying to do a routine backup from our production site collection and then restore that site collection down to a dev and test box. We've done this numerous times without issue but all of a sudden it was failing for no (known to us) reason. We were getting the following error message: Restore-SPSite : Your backup is from a different version of Microsoft SharePoint Foundation and cannot be restored to a server running the current version. The backup file should be restored to a server with version '4.0.145.0' or later.

Insert a Hotspot Using SharePoint Designer 2010 (Views from Veronique)
There are a few things that power users can do in SharePoint Designer (SPD) that are perfectly harmless.  Inserting hotspots onto images is one of them.  This doesn’t mean you can unleash yourself onto SPD with gay abandon, please make sure you understand how SharePoint fits together before you start taking on SPD. Maybe you have an image like a puzzle or map that you’d like to insert links onto.

Video: The 5 Pillars of SharePoint Governance (21apps)
We briefly talked about the 5 Pillars of SharePoint Governance in our post ‘Governance 3.0‘. In this video post, we explain the 5 pillars in more detail and present you with a great visualisation you can use to articulate the 5 Pillars of SharePoint Governance to your business and IT stakeholders.

The “No Code” SharePoint Strategy (PointBeyond)
For an initial deployment of SharePoint 2010 how about saying: “We will not do anything that involves custom code. We will restrict ourselves to what we can do with out-of-the-box SharePoint and associated tools” This is somewhat controversial. I can already hear rumblings of discontent from distant IT strategists. IT strategy should be derived from business strategy, right? An IT strategy should put in place systems and practices that support the business in achieving its objectives. If we say “we won’t do any custom code” this is surely a classic case of tail (technology) wagging dog (business). Why should the constraints of a technology be used to tell the business what they can and can’t have?

When Page Output Caching Does Not Output (todd-carter.com)
SharePoint’s Page Output Caching can offer a massive performance boost to publishing sites but only when its working and working correctly. One of the problems I have seen is when some administrators turn on Page Output Caching they just assume it works. While this may be the desire and in most cases it may just work for you I would suggest you verify; and I don’t mean hit the site with the browser to see if it speeds up. This post is about troubleshooting SharePoint’s Page Output Caching. Now if you don’t use Page Output Caching or yours is working just fine you are the “Master of your Page Output Caching” – as for the rest of us we will likely need to put on our troubleshooting hat and dig a bit deeper. I find troubleshooting anything is allot easier if you know a little about how the component you are troubleshooting operates and how it is supposed to work.

Around Bamboo Nation
Guest Blog by Dan Holme: SharePoint Perspectives South of the Equator (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Greetings, all! I am writing this column from 35,000 feet, on a plane to Patagonia, Chile. I am looking down at a ridiculously beautiful and dramatic landscape of mountains, glaciers, sharp valleys, turquoise glacial lakes, and cone shaped volcanoes... So excuse me for any typos I make while typing and looking out of the window at the same time! We're on our way to Punta Arenas, Chile, which is our jumping off point for the final stop on the Sharing The Point South America tour: Antarctica. Tomorrow, I am privileged and lucky enough to head to this remote end of the planet, bringing along the SharePoint message to the researchers, information workers, and penguins of the white continent.

Microsoft Updates
Activating SharePoint 2010 Sandboxed Solutions by Using Code (Wrox) (MSDN)
The sandboxed solution is a new feature in SharePoint 2010 that enables developers to create SharePoint 2010 functionality that runs in a separate memory space called a "sandbox." The code in the solution runs in the sandbox, and any problems in the code remain isolated and do not cause the SharePoint web application in which it is running to stop responding. In previous versions of SharePoint, developers had to add their assemblies to the global assembly cache (GAC) or to the in folder of the SharePoint virtual directory.
