Top SharePoint Trends to Watch in 2012 (Fierce Content Management)
As we move toward 2012, I see several emerging trends that will affect organizations using SharePoint in the new year. Social networking, cloud and governance are the hot topics today, and all will present various challenges over the next year, along with the way we prepare for the next generation of SharePoint. Here's the way I see these trends developing:

Video Blog: Collaborative Taxonomy Creation in SharePoint 2010 (CMSWire)
Without being able to find documents quickly and easily, employees lose valuable time. By creating and maintaining strong taxonomies, enterprises ensure that easy access to important documents are maintained. In my last post, I demonstrated the necessity of good metadata to access digital assets. With this post, I explore how everyone across an enterprise can contribute to strong metadata in SharePoint 2010.

What's in (and Missing From) Microsoft's Latest Batch of Azure Cloud Updates (ZDNet)
Microsoft has rolled out its latest batch of Windows Azure and SQL Azure updates, company officials said on December 12. The updates include final delivery of some open-source-related functionality, including a limited preview of the Windows Azure Hadoop service for which Microsoft announced plans earlier this fall. Here’s what is in the Windows Azure December update:

Amazon Bests Microsoft, All Other Contenders in Cloud Storage Test (Ars Technica)
Amazon's S3 Simple Storage Service has outperformed Microsoft's Windows Azure Storage and all other major providers in an extensive study testing the feasibility of businesses using cloud services for primary storage, data protection, and disaster recovery. Nasuni, which sells data protection services that work across any type of cloud storage, says it has been testing the 16 largest cloud storage providers (CSPs) since April 2009 to determine the best services for its customers. Ultimately, only six of the 16 providers passed Nasuni's testing—in addition to Amazon and Microsoft, the other winners were Nirvanix, Rackspace, AT&T Synaptic, and Peer1 Hosting. Both AT&T and Peer1 use EMC's Atmos platform on the back end, although EMC itself discontinued its own public cloud based on Atmos.

5 Moves Microsoft Must Make In 2012 (InformationWeek)
Microsoft remains the world's biggest software company, but it might not be for long unless it reestablishes itself, and its brands, as the products of choice for tech users in the consumer and enterprise markets. Once the unquestioned king of personal computing, Microsoft has become almost irrelevant in key markets like mobility and search, and even seemingly once unassailable franchises like Windows and Explorer are under threat. Here are some moves the company must make next year if it hopes to regain some relevance.

Microsoft's iPad Software Barrage: Reality Meets Business Savvy (ZDNet)
Microsoft has launched software for Apple’s iPad at a blistering pace of late and there’s some consternation about whether these moves are wise. First, Microsoft realizes that it doesn’t dominate computing anymore—especially the mobile world. That reality is running into another key fact: Microsoft applications are everywhere. In other words, Microsoft’s plans to launch iPad versions of OneNote, Lync and SkyDrive, which isn’t optimized for Apple’s tablet, is just smart business. Simply put, the killer app on a single platform days are over.

Around the Blogosphere
Requirements or 'SharePoint Requirements' (The Scribble SharePoint Blog)
I've written lots about requirements, or requirement gathering, on this blog. Check here if you don't believe me! It makes up a huge part of my day so I guess I have quite a few views on it. But obviously it is also a huge part of any IT project. Before you build something, you need to know what you are building, and why. A project I'm currently working on involves some very complex requirements. These are a mix of things an existing app does, some bits of functionality requested by end users, and some wishful thinking. All in all there are lots of things to consider. As a result I'm spending a lot of time in 'requirement gathering mode'.

Structural Basics: My Thoughts on Structure Design Part 1 (Perspectives on SharePoint)
Mind mapping is popular among SharePoint designers as it allows layout of potential site structures with little effort. Modern mind mapping tools allow alternate hierarchies to be modelled in almost no time. The image above was created using FreeMind an open source mind mapping tool available on sourceforge. This shows an easy starting point based on departments. Most taxonomy designers will immediately be concerned over the above as departmental designs can quickly become limited. For example, where would you store documents that are accessed by both sales and marketing departments?

The Cloud is Not the Problem–Part 1: Has it Been Here All Along? (Clever Workarounds)
I have been meaning to write a post or three on cloud computing, and its benefits, challenges and eventual legacy. I’ve finally had some time to do so. This series will span over a few posts (not sure how many at this stage) and will focus mainly on SharePoint. In short, I think the cloud is a shining example of innovation, combined with human irrationality, poorly thought out process with a dash of organisational dysfunction. In this first post, I will give you a little cloud history lesson, through the eyes of a slightly jaded IT infrastructure person. To that end, I will try and do the following throughout this series:

Around Bamboo Nation
Save 10% on All Bamboo Suites Through December 31 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Hello to everyone out there in Bamboo Nation. It's been a while since my last blog post, but with the latest news I couldn't resist. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday getting all of the press of late, Bamboo thought it would take it up a notch and offer Discount December! 'Tis the Season, after all! OK, I admit Bamboo isn't officially calling it that, I just thought it sounded good. However, the truth is that Bamboo is doing something I haven't ever seen in the two years I've worked here: offering 10% off every Suite in our catalog.  The Suites are already heavily discounted when compared to purchasing all of the individual components a la carte, and we're offering an additional 10% off your Suite purchases in December.

Access Multiple SharePoint 2010 Lists by Using LINQ (MSDN)
In this exercise, you develop and deploy a visual Web Part that reads data from three lists by using LINQ queries and displays the results in a grid view control. The Web Part also contains a drop-down control that enables you to select which query is executed. To complete this task, you must do the following: Create a Visual Web Part Project; Generate LINQ to SharePoint Proxy Code; Add Code to Create the SharePoint Controls; Add the LINQ Queries to the Project; Test the Solution.
