The 5 Deadly Sins of SharePoint in the Enterprise (CMSWire)
SharePoint recently turned 10-years-old and is now arguably among the most successful software platforms ever in terms of sales and installations. The newest version marks the latest of three major revisions. There is almost universal agreement that the SharePoint 2010 platform is vastly improved from a technology perspective when compared to its predecessors. Yet, despite all of the successes, most organizations are using only a fraction of the product's capabilities. Frustration abounds as IT and business users grapple to extend more robust functionality throughout the enterprise.

SharePoint 2007 Service Pack 3 (SP3) Released (Softpedia)
As it traditionally does, Microsoft released the upgrades for version 2007 of its Office client and server offerings in tandem. Service Pack 3 is currently available for download not only for customers running Office 2007 but also for those with SharePoint 2007. SharePoint 2007 SP3 RTM can be grabbed through the Microsoft Download Center. This is just the first stage of the service pack’s distribution, as the software giant also plans to serve the upgrade through Microsoft Update.

With Dynamics CRM 2011 Update, Microsoft's Focus Shifts to Social (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft on Tuesday went live with the Dynamics CRM November 2011 service update, which brings social technologies to the online and on-premise CRM platform that Microsoft released at the beginning of the year. The release comes relatively early in Microsoft's calendar year Q4 delivery target for the customer relationship management (CRM) product update.

Why Windows 8 is Microsoft’s 'Apple-like' Slippery Slope (NetworkWorld)
Now that we’ve been able to spend a little time with the Windows 8 Developer Preview, it’s obvious that Microsoft is tailoring many of the interface elements to Touch enabled platforms. This is all well and good since Microsoft has to make a strong play in the ultramobile space, but I fear some of the decisions being made could adversely affect desktop editions of the OS and put off many longtime Windows users.

With New Smartphones, High Hopes for Nokia and Microsoft (The New York Times)
Nokia on Wednesday unveiled two new smartphones, the first fruits of the Finnish company’s alliance with Microsoft and a bid to recover market leadership, as well as extend Microsoft’s dominance in software for mobile devices. Nokia’s chief executive, Stephen Elop, presented the Lumia 800, a €420 ($584) flat-screen device aimed at high-end users, and the Lumia 710, priced at €270, which is aimed at cost-conscious consumers. Both devices are being sold this month in six European countries and later this year in parts of Asia.

Is Records Management and Usability, Together, Even Possible? (AIIM)
Why are 75% of the organizations in the United States (with an enterprise presence) looking at implementing a records management solution and why are they drawn so much to a particular Microsoft platform? Can you have an enterprise content management (ECM) enterprise records management (ERM) solution with an easy to use interface that users are drawn to? How about a centralized platform that the organization can use as a Service? Lastly, can the organizations Intranet be seamlessly integrated as well as your file shares, exchange public folders, and other online or proprietary applications?

Why SharePoint Training Sometimes Doesn’t Deliver (and What to do About it) (Clever Workarounds)
I was surprised to see the recent SharePoint Fatigue Syndrome post got some traction in the interweb. As it happened, that particular post was kicking around in an unfinished state for months. The thing is, it's not the only “home truth” type of post that I have sitting in my “drafts” folder. I also have one on the state of the SharePoint training market. Given that I have a training announcement to make, I thought that I would combine them. A day in the life… We recently worked on a SharePoint upgrade project, where the previous developers did an excellent job overall. That is…if you judge them on the SharePoint governance metrics of writing clean and maintainable code, packaging it up properly, not hacking away at system files and actually writing documentation.

Configuring SQL Server Mirroring for SharePoint 2010 (From The Field)
A couple of weeks ago at the SharePoint conference Chris and I delivered 3 sessions, one of which was “Deploying SharePoint 2010 as a Mission Critical Application”, in which we covered high availability options for SharePoint 2010. One of the key demonstrations showed the end-to-end configuration of high availability within a farm using SQL Server mirroring for the database tier. As promised, the PowerShell and TSQL we used is provided here in this blog post.

Around Bamboo Nation
Posting to a Community Central for SharePoint 2010 Blog Using Windows Live Writer (The Bamboo Team Blog)
This past week, Bamboo Solutions released Community Central for SharePoint 2010, a new SharePoint-based social solution that enjoyed a great reception when it was previewed for attendees at both the recent SharePoint Conference in Anaheim and the European SharePoint Conference in Berlin. SharePoint, and the 2010 release in particular, provides good out-of-the-box discussion boards and blogs, and when combined with features such as search, workflow, alerting, and records management, social networking provides the depth that makes those discussion boards and blogs really shine within the collaborative framework. The greatest value of Community Central comes into play by extending the already extensive social network and knowledge-sharing features of the SharePoint platform by adding critical real-world functionality to blogging and forum management.

EuropeanSP11: 'Proven Practices for Utilizing the Cloud in SharePoint Deployments,' Presented by AvePoint’s Ernst Hutsteiner (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Ernst Hutsteiner of AvePoint presented a session at the European SharePoint Conference this week on utilizing the cloud in SharePoint deployments.  As the title of his presentation stated, his goal was to present proven real-world practices and not just theory.   In order to set the stage for the discussion, the first part of Ernst’s presentation provided a primer on cloud terminology.  Ernst introduced the basics of the cloud: IaaS (infrastructure as a service), SaaS (software as a service) and PaaS (platform as a service).  He described these as the three cloud computing options.  PaaS was defined as “cloud as an operating system” and included examples such as Amazon Ec2 and Windows Azure.  SaaS included offerings like Salesforce.com and Office 365, and IaaS as “the cloud as hardware”.  His session would focus on only IaaS and SaaS remarked Ernst.

Working with Menus and Navigation Objects in SharePoint Server 2010 (ECM) (MSDN)
You declare horizontal and vertical menu instructions for navigation in XML for the master page. Two classes are used to make navigation work: PortalSiteMapDataSource and PortalSiteMapProvider. The PortalSiteMapProvider object provides the site hierarchy (navigation structure) and monitors the relationship between nodes. The PortalSiteMapDataSource object maps navigation features from the PortalSiteMapProvider and filters navigation elements to determine which are viewable to the user in the horizontal or vertical menus or in breadcrumbs.
