Getting Started with SharePoint Online 2010 Development (ComputerWeekly)
In this guest blog post, Jeremy Thake, enterprise architect and Microsoft SharePoint MVP at AvePoint looks at the different options available for first-step real-world deployment of the SharePoint proposition. As discussed in the previous article, SharePoint is a rapid application development platform. What brings real power to the organisation, however, is that there are different tiers available to build different solutions at different levels:

Is Legal Ready for SharePoint? (CMSWire)
Last year I wrote an article entitled “Is the Legal Industry Ready for SharePoint?”, as I had just gotten back from ILTA with fresh questions in my mind from inquiring customers about using the platform as a Document Management System (DMS), in lieu of Autonomy Worksite or OpenText DOCS Open. The article was a simple walk through on the viability of moving to SharePoint as a DMS in a law firm. I’d like to expand on that topic now and share with you some of my experiences with respect to recent client engagements of this type.

Where are the SharePoint Solutions in Nielsen Norman Group's “10 Best Intranets” for 2012? (NetworkWorld)
Earlier this month, Nielsen Norman Group released their annual list of the 10 best intranets. In recent years, at least half of the winners featured solutions built on SharePoint. This year, the Intranet Design Annual 2012 includes only 3 intranets based on SharePoint, though an additional two companies use SharePoint for team collaboration. So, what's going on?

A CTO’s Take on Cloud (GigaOm)
As Capgemini’s CTO for North America, Joe Coyle hears an awful lot about cloud computing. He hears it from customers that want to evaluate cloud solutions and from vendors that want to win that business. Capgemini, a $12 billion global systems integrator, has relationships with all the major vendors and many enterprise customers, so it’s interesting to hear what Coyle has to say about the current state of the market. Here are my main takeaways from a recent conversation with him.

Meet Bill Gates, the Man Who Changed Open Source Software (Wired)
The meeting took place a week before Bill Gates retired from Microsoft, and the topic was open source software. It was the summer of 2008, and for years, the open source community had viewed Microsoft as public enemy number one. Seven years earlier, CEO Steve Ballmer had referred to Linux as a “malignant cancer,” and as recently as the previous summer, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith and licensing chief Horacio Gutierrez had told Fortune Magazine that Linux violated 235 of its patents, implying that it would soon demand royalties from any big business using the open source OS.

Why Employees Don't Like Social Apps (InformationWeek)
When it comes to social networking, most companies find themselves in a jam. While they're extending their brand presences on the ever-popular public social network sites--Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn--they're having a devil of a time getting employees to embrace their internal social networks.

Customize the UI of Web Parts in SharePoint 2010 (Me & My SharePoint Designer)
This post describes how to customize a standard Web Part in SharePoint by using SharePoint Designer 2010. Depending of the look and feel or factors such as accessibility, performance or cross browser stability it could be a challenge to bend the web part UI exactly in the way you want. The markup of the web parts in SharePoint contains a quite deep nested table structure and the elements do not always have an id or class.

Inconvenient Using Widgets in SharePoint for End Users (Waldek Mastykarz)
It’s a common approach to use widgets to enrich web solutions. Unfortunately using widgets with SharePoint 2010 has a number of challenges. Find out why using widgets with SharePoint is inconvenient and how you can simplify it.

How Does Microsoft IT Do It? Check Out these IT Showcase Resources for SharePoint Server 2010 (To the SharePoint)
One common question we get from customers who are evaluating SharePoint Server 2010 or a specific SharePoint scenario is: “How did someone else do it?” Or, more specifically: “How did Microsoft IT do it?” Fortunately, Microsoft IT documents and publishes a set of resources known as Microsoft IT Showcase, which describes how they designed and deployed various Microsoft technologies and products. These resources include Webcasts, TechNet Edge videos, and Quick Reference Guides.

Fabulous SQL Server Connection Troubleshooting Article in the TechNet Wiki! (To the SharePoint)
Check out How to Troubleshoot Connecting to the SQL Server Database Engine in the TechNet Wiki. Author Rick Byman takes you step-by-step though the troubleshooting process when you get the “Connect to Server” error. I strongly encourage you to bookmark this article and use it for the next time you see this type of error. Additionally, because it is a TechNet Wiki article, all it takes is a Windows Live ID and you can add to it and improve it based on your experiences.

Guest Blog by Dan Holme: SharePoint Perspectives South of the Equator (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Greetings, all! I am writing this column from 35,000 feet, on a plane to Patagonia, Chile. I am looking down at a ridiculously beautiful and dramatic landscape of mountains, glaciers, sharp valleys, turquoise glacial lakes, and cone shaped volcanoes... So excuse me for any typos I make while typing and looking out of the window at the same time! We're on our way to Punta Arenas, Chile, which is our jumping off point for the final stop on the Sharing The Point South America tour: Antarctica. Tomorrow, I am privileged and lucky enough to head to this remote end of the planet, bringing along the SharePoint message to the researchers, information workers, and penguins of the white continent.

Activating SharePoint 2010 Sandboxed Solutions by Using Code (Wrox) (MSDN)
The sandboxed solution is a new feature in SharePoint 2010 that enables developers to create SharePoint 2010 functionality that runs in a separate memory space called a "sandbox." The code in the solution runs in the sandbox, and any problems in the code remain isolated and do not cause the SharePoint web application in which it is running to stop responding. In previous versions of SharePoint, developers had to add their assemblies to the global assembly cache (GAC) or to the in folder of the SharePoint virtual directory.
