Despite SharePoint's Success, The Social Intranet is Still Rare (CMSWire)
Microsoft’s takeover of the corporate intranet has been rapid, and nearly overwhelming. Nearly two-thirds of all organizations (all except the very smallest) in the Western World use SharePoint, in some shape or form (according to multiple surveys). Despite its most unimpressive start and growth as a second-tier technology just a few years ago – lagging well-behind IBM’s Websphere and other commercial portal and CMS technologies – SharePoint has become the leader of the pack, powering more intranets than any other solution.

How are Australian Organisations Solving the ECM Puzzle? (IDM)
We asked  Australia/NZ organisations how they are dealing with the complex challenges of enterprise content management (ECM) today. Around a third of IDM readers surveyed have deployed SharePoint as an ECM platform, a third are using use SharePoint alongside another ECM platform for governance and risk, and the remaining third have not deployed SharePoint at all.

IDC's View of SharePoint's Marketshare Numbers (FierceContentManagement)
Last week, we ran a post called SharePoint by the numbers, which outlined some of the numbers bandied about at the recent SharePoint conference and put them in the context of some Gartner research.

Integrating SharePoint Social Features in Windows Phone 7 Apps (memeburn)
At this year’s Tech*Ed Africa, founder and director at Aptillon and SharePoint expert, Matthew McDermott discussed some the ways in which Windows Phone 7 users can use SharePoint web services to work with social data. SharePoint collaboration software helps simplify business intelligence, content management, search, and sharing for intranet and internet sites.

The Cloud is Broken, Who Will Offer an Integrated Future for Users? (CMSWire)
By some cloud magic, and a lot of user-side shuffling, you can just about get your desktop email, browser bookmarks and some documents accessible on any device of your choice. But shouldn't open access be a no-brainer, no-action-required, offering from Amazon, Google, Apple and others when offering us cloud-based services?

Microsoft Chief Admits Lucky Escape from Buying Yahoo! (The Telegraph)
In a week which has seen Yahoo! post disappointing third quarter results, during which its profit and revenue slipped year-on-year, Ballmer’s sighs of relief over not paying over the odds for the ailing internet firm, will have come as a harsh blow. Speaking at the annual Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, the straight-talking Microsoft chief admitted, when asked whether he was relieved that the company had not bought Yahoo! for $44.6bn: “Hallelujah…You know times change…sometimes you’re lucky.”

Around the Blogosphere
What I learned at the European SharePoint Conference, Day 1 (SharePoint and Assessment Blog)
Here’s an update from the stimulating European SharePoint Conference in Berlin. There are 800 attendees, a lot of vendors (3 exhibit halls) and many interesting people to talk to. The Estrel Hotel and Conference Center is a good venue, very comfortable and although huge also human.

Thoughts on User Adoption and Governance from the SharePoint Conference 2011 (To the SharePoint)
Did you know that there were 22 sessions at the SharePoint Conference devoted to governance? Me either, until I started building my schedule and found that there were way more talks than I could possibly attend. I did manage to catch three of the governance sessions, one each on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and found a couple of common themes to mull over about user adoption and governance that I thought I’d share with all of you.

What “The Far Side” can Teach Us About SharePoint (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
If any part of you has a sense of humor, January 1995 was a tragic time in your life as it marked the end of one of the greatest comics of all time The Far Side. No other comic has ever been so hilarious in its intelligence and randomness (although Calvin and Hobbes does come close). Gary Larson’s brilliant sense of humor will forever live on in desk calendars, books, and bazillions of internet references. So, what the heck does “The Far Side” have to do with SharePoint you may ask?? Well.. more than you might think actually. Even though the comic ended years before the first version of SharePoint came slithering out the primordial ooze, we can look back on some of them with our SharePoint goggles on and glean some insight into SharePoint and even find some wisdom and guidance.

The Need for Pro-active e-Discovery (AIIM)
Managing and controlling electronically stored information (ESI) is a matter of technology, but also of strict procedures, quality control and well-documented information management activities. ESI has become one of the most serious sources of legal exposure and risk.

Introducing Document Sets (Microsoft Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog)
Hi there, this is Quentin again. In today’s post I would like to introduce an exciting new content type that is used as an architectural component for organizing multi document based work products. Document sets fit between documents and sites. You can use document sets when you have a group of related documents to collaborate on, but don’t need an entirely new document library or site. Document sets provide a collaborative workspace where users can work on a related group of documents. Since the release of SharePoint 2010, I have seen document sets being used for a wide variety of scenarios internally here at Microsoft and with some of our customers. Some examples include research projects, software development specifications, knowledge management repositories, and usability studies.

Working with Menus and Navigation Objects in SharePoint Server 2010 (ECM) (MSDN)
You declare horizontal and vertical menu instructions for navigation in XML for the master page. Two classes are used to make navigation work: PortalSiteMapDataSource and PortalSiteMapProvider. The PortalSiteMapProvider object provides the site hierarchy (navigation structure) and monitors the relationship between nodes. The PortalSiteMapDataSource object maps navigation features from the PortalSiteMapProvider and filters navigation elements to determine which are viewable to the user in the horizontal or vertical menus or in breadcrumbs.
