Report: A Third of Organizations Use SharePoint as an Enterprise CMS (CMS Wire)
While we have seen over the week just gone by the massive interest in SharePoint and a steady increase in the deployment of SharePoint 2010, how it is being used across the enterprise varies. A new EMC-sponsored AIIM report shows that one of those uses is as an enterprise content management system.

SharePoint 2011: Microsoft Promises Major Update to SharePoint Online (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft opened Day 1 of its SharePoint Conference 2011 in Anaheim, Calif. by talking about the upcoming release of the first major update to SharePoint Online. A component of the cloud-based Office 365 suite that Microsoft launched in June, the SharePoint Online update will be coming by year's end, revealed Microsoft's Jeff Teper, corporate vice president of the Office Business Platform at Microsoft, during his keynote presentation. SharePoint Online will come with Business Connectivity Services (BCS), among other features.

SharePoint Users Cold on Public Cloud (CRN)
SharePoint users have indicated their intention to stick with on-premise deployment, with only 15 percent planning to shift the application into the public cloud by 2015. A poll of 2350 firms by Osterman Research [pdf] found public cloud deployments would rise from three percent today to 15 percent in 2015. The main movement in SharePoint deployments would be from on-premise data centres to 'private cloud' facilities.

Microsoft to Make Some Tester-requested Windows 8 UI Concessions (ZDNet)
In the third post on its Windows 8 Start Menu plans, Microsoft officials noted the company will be making some minor modifications to the tiled UI. The question is whether the customizations will be enough to appease users and administrators leery of the new default interface. An October 11 post on the Building Windows 8 blog conceded that some of the criticisms of the Metro-style Windows 8 interface have given the Windows 8 team food for thought. Post author Marina Dukhon, a senior program manager lead on the Core Experience team, noted that business/enterprise Windows users typically use Start menus customized for them by their administrators.

The Usefulness (or not) of Cloud Office Application Suite Reviews (WindowsITPro)
Reading the review that purports to compare and contrast the competing cloud-based office application suites from Microsoft, Google, and Zoho, I wonder about the usefulness or even the feasibility of attempting to write such a report at this point in the evolution of cloud technology. Although it’s true that Google Apps has been around for several years, its competitors are still relatively new. As such, I don’t think it is possible to provide a realistic assessment of just how well a broad spectrum of cloud-based products perform in production. We can certainly review Office 365 since its debut last June and discuss how well Microsoft has delivered cloud-based versions of Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync. We might quibble at the choice of Microsoft plans and point to the two rather public outages that the service has suffered recently. We can compare the approach taken by Zoho to those used by Google or Microsoft and debate whether a free version of the software is worth having (of course it is, but not when a company starts to grow and support becomes important). But we still can’t discuss important topics that CIOs ponder as they decide which cloud-based suite to select and separate the reality from the undoubted hype that surrounds this topic.

Microsoft Adds Big Data to SQL Server 2012 (InformationWeek)
Microsoft announced Wednesday that the next major release of its database platform will be called SQL Server 2012. The release was expected and the name is no shocker, but Microsoft added a couple of surprises. First, the platform will include big data processing capabilities based on Apache Hadoop. And second, new touch-based data exploration capabilities will be extended to Apple iOS devices.

How to Download and Try Windows 8 for Free (PC Advisor)
Windows 7 is hugely popular with consumers, but its succcessor has been in development ever since the operating system's (OS') launch. Windows 8 was first unveiled by CEO Steve Ballmer at CES in January; in September, a Developer Preview was released at Microsoft's Build conference. Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows division, describes the forthcoming OS as "a reimagining of Windows, from the chipset to the experience".

Policy and Retention in SharePoint Server 2010 (Microsoft Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog)
In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 we released Information Management Policy. This allowed auditing and expiration on a per content type basis. With SharePoint Server 2010 retention flexibility has been greatly increased. There are now several retention actions that can be performed out of box and it is easy to trigger custom workflows. The biggest new feature is the ability to do location based retention (set retention by folder), which opens new options for hierarchical file plans. You can also do multi stage retention as well.

Make Custom List Forms Centralized Manageable (n8d)
SharePoint Designer is a great tool for prototyping but it can really mess up your installation. I want to show a new way / old way how customized form could be make centralised manageable. For example if you want to create a list form that has certain columns visible to users with a special permission. The fastest way to get there is to create a custom list form is in SharePoint Designer. A tutorial for this can be found at Microsoft Create a custom list form using SharePoint Designer – SharePoint …. Customising form works great as long as you have a single list and a single form in your portal. If someone saved the list as template and created new instance, the problem start to begin when something needs to be changed in the form.

Why SharePoint is Falling in Love with AIIM (AIIM)
Since SharePoint 2010 was released, the expert community around SharePoint has received a massive influx of a different type of person than they were used to. These people have titles like Information Architect, Records Manager, Information Manager, etc. These crazy people seem to love to talk about Taxonomies, Information Architecture and Governance. The influx of information workers to SharePoint has been due to the rapid maturation process that SharePoint has undergone in relation to its' prowess for Enterprise Content & Records Management (ECM/ERM or ECRM).

Customizing AccessDenied, SignOut and Other Pages in SharePoint 2010 using PowerShell (SharePoint Dev Wiki)
When building a custom solution in SharePoint, whether intranet or public facing, you often need to balance out-of-the-box functionality with the custom look and feel your customer is asking for. There are number of out-of-the-box system pages which SharePoint uses to display upon various events. For example; AccessDenied.aspx page is displayed when a user is trying to access the resource they don't have permission to. Signout.aspx is a common one – displayed when user chooses to sign out.

Around Bamboo Nation
SPC11: Community Central for SharePoint 2010 Receives Overwhelmingly Positive Response (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Things are never lonely at the Bamboo Booth at an SPC event, but since our press release hit the wires earlier this week, we've been exceptionally busy with attendees wanting to get a first look at the newest addition to the Bamboo application family: Community Central. Some of the "early birds" had attended the Bamboo customer appreciation party at the House of Blues Monday night, and were anxious to see Bamboo's entrance to the social collaboration space. Below are some of the comments and reactions we've fielded so far:

SPC11: Rob Koplowitz Presents ‘The Forrester Survey: Best Practices in SharePoint 2010 Adoption and Migration’ (SharePoint 2010)
Tuesday afternoon at the SPC, Rob Koplowitz, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Forrester Research, presented a session discussing the results of the Global SharePoint Usage Online Survey which was conducted in July. Invited to participate in the survey were Forrester clients, participants in previous SharePoint workshops, and Twitter users. Rob explained that Forrester had hoped for 100 respondents, but they shut it off just two days later, with over 500 respondents having already participated.

SPC11: 'More Than My: How Microsoft is Driving Social Adoption and Intranet Transformation' with Internal Enhancements to OOTB SharePoint Social Features (SharePoint 2010)
This morning at the SPC, Microsoft Senior Solutions Manager Chris Slemp and Senior Program Manager Sean Squires presented a session demonstrating their efforts to drive social adoption at Microsoft by implementing enhancements to the out-of-the-box social features of SharePoint 2010 for the company's intranet. Going "deeper" into some of what Dave Pae and Paul Javid had shown in their (immediately preceding) Improving Productivity with Social session, Sean explained that he and Chris would walk through the strategy they put together to comprehensively revamp the Microsoft intranet over the last year.  Sean noted that theirs is a multi-year plan, and that they would discuss some of the aspirational goals as well.  In essence, the goal is to rebrand My Sites as, simply, "My" (with a new look and feel) to "aggregate social activity as [you] engage across the enterprise."

SPC11: Day 2 Report from the Bamboo Booth (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As I mentioned yesterday, this isn't exactly my first SharePoint event, so I usually know what to expect in the Bamboo booth.  As I'm sure other vendors would attest, booth traffic normally peaks on the opening day of a show, and then slowly declines throughout the week.  Not at SPC 2011!  Tuesday was our busiest day yet, with a steady stream of people to the booth, and even a line to see demos - not quite as bad as the one for Space Mountain at the official conference party at Disneyland last night, but close!  Of course, we're always happy to give out t-shirts and pandas to attendees, but we were even more excited that most people were there to actually see our products and to learn more about Bamboo.  The excitement for Community Central seems to be growing each day, and it's fun demoing this product to people from companies who are looking to begin hosting forums and writing blogs, both for internal information and also for public consumption.  The feedback has been great so far, and we've already gotten a handful of enhancement requests!  As usual, we get a good mix of people who are happy Bamboo customers as well as people relatively new to SharePoint who are looking to learn more about third party solutions that can enhance their SharePoint deployment.  One advantage of having over 70 products is that 99% of the time we have something for everyone, no matter where they are in their SharePoint maturity.
