Everybody Hurts. Being an Athens, Georgia kid, I can't help but be a bit bummed by this.  ::sigh:: -- Dooley

Governance Roundtable: What is SharePoint Governance? (CMSWire)
One of the major benefits of participating in SharePoint events worldwide is the ability to get to know some of the thought leaders in the community and to leverage the collective unconscious. In between sessions, the hallways are usually lined with experts and attendees sharing their experiences, weighing in on the trending topics of the day. At a recent event, I found myself sitting in the lobby of the convention center with a couple fellow presenters discussing SharePoint governance: what it is, why it’s now such a hot topic in the community, and what people need to do about it. Rather than produce an opinion piece on the topic, I thought it would be interesting to share the roundtable dialog.

What to Watch Out for When Migrating to Office 365 (ComputerWeekly)
In this guest blog post, Jeremy Thake, enterprise architect and Microsoft SharePoint MVP at Avepoint looks at how to move onto Office 365. Office 365 is Microsoft's latest iteration of its online business productivity suite, potentially shifting many traditionally on-premises products and services from the server room to the cloud. With many businesses assessing the pros and cons of cloud computing, the issue of moving content is being highlighted as a key concern for potential users unsure of the complications associated with the migration process. So, what exactly are these challenges and what can businesses do to ease their way into the cloud without threatening business continuity?

Breaking Down BUILD (SDTimes)
What did Microsoft’s BUILD Conference in Anaheim this month mean for developers? No group of developers was cast aside; there is something for everyone in the developer story surrounding Windows 8. There were some clear winners: C++ developers, lovers of HTML5 and JavaScript, those that love the Metro interface provided by Windows Phone 7, and those hoping Microsoft would make a competitive entry into the tablet market.

A Deep Dive into Windows 8 Developer Preview (ComputerWorld)
After spending several days with the Developer Preview of Windows 8 on a PC, it's clear that Microsoft's new operating system -- which offers two separate interfaces, Metro and Desktop -- is a transitional one between traditional computers and mobile devices. All of Microsoft's energy and creativity has been devoted to the new Metro interface; there's very little new of note for the old-fashioned Desktop. As I tested Windows 8, I found myself wanting to use it on a tablet instead of my PC, because the big-tiled Metro was so much more visually appealing than the traditional Desktop, with a more intriguing feature set. After using Windows 8 for some time, it's clear that Metro is the future of Windows, and the Desktop the past.

How HTML5 Can Save Microsoft and Bite Apple on the Bum (ABC)
In the beginning, we used applications, tiny files ending in .COM or .EXE, which we invoked from the command line interface on our brand new personal computers. They did one or two things - word processing, database, terminal emulation - and little else. We used these programs one at a time, completing our work in one before moving along to the next task. Even after graphical user interfaces came along, we rarely did several things at once. What was there to do? Type a document. Run the numbers. Dial in to the main office mainframe and upload the documents. Repeat, forever, interspersed by brief games of solitaire.

Dear Microsoft: When Your Cloud Goes Down, Keep Users Informed (InfoWorld)
Microsoft still doesn't get it. Tuesday, Arthur de Haan, VP of Windows Live Test and Service Engineering, posted an analysis of the Sept. 8 outage that took down most of Microsoft's cloud applications. On the Windows Team Blog he explains: "(W)e have identified two streams of work to drive specific service improvements around monitoring, problem identification, and recovery. Along with these service improvements, Microsoft is focused on further hardening the DNS service to improve its overall redundancy and fail-over capability... [and] an additional recovery process that will allow a specific property the ability to fail over to restore service and then fail back when the DNS service is restored. In addition, we are reviewing the recovery tools to see if we can make more improvements that will decrease the time it takes to resolve outages." Nowhere does he mention the single most important failure on Sept. 8: Microsoft didn't keep its customers informed.

Microsoft Readies Mango Update for Windows Phones (ZDNet)
Microsoft will start rolling out the Windows Phone 7.5 'Mango' update in the next couple of weeks, the software giant said on Wednesday. Although the first smartphones to come with Mango preinstalled are starting to make an appearance, older Windows Phones will also be getting updated to the new version of the operating system. In a blog post, Microsoft customer experience engineering manager Eric Hautala said the time for that upgrade was almost here.

Site and Site Collection Level Recycle Bin (SharePoint 2007 & 2010 Weblog)
Previously a common question I would get from folks new to SharePoint would be “How do I recover the site I just deleted via the Recycle Bin?” to which unfortunately my reply would be “Umm you don’t.” This was a little scary for some situations since in many cases in SharePoint, we might use a site as a container for a group of documents rather than a folder and it can be a bit of a headache to do a site level restore from a larger backup. Plus let’s face it…If I accidentally delete something, I don’t necessarily want to run off to IT to confess to it.

Using Profile Properties to Redirect Users (AIIM)
There are many cases where you want to redirect users to a particular home page based upon who they are. An excellent example is if you have extranet users that fall into different categories or need to be directed to different sites. There are several ways to accomplish this but I think one of the most straight forward and easiest to implement for small or medium sized installations is to use User Profile properties and a little bit of JavaScript and some aspx. The gist of this solution is create and populate a user profile property, create a redirect page, and add some JavaScript to redirect page. We will go ahead and outline these steps in a little more detail. This solution requires you to have the Enterprise version of SharePoint but will work with 2007 or 2010 (even 2003 if that is still around).

My Top 10 Tests When Testing Custom SharePoint Web Parts (SharePointDevWiki)
Often, developers work on development environments where they have full permissions. Because of that, they might not notice some permission issues. Having a test account with lower permissions helps identify such problems before going further in the deployment cycle.

SharePoint 2010 and PowerShell Better Together - Creating Multiple Sites (SharePoint 365)
So in the last post we looked at accessing SharePoint and creating a site, but we didn’t go into much detail about the process so we will look at it in a little more detail now. Let’s just bring back the creating site line from the last post and inspect it a little.

Microsoft BUILD Conference Wrap-up: What's in Windows 8? (The Bamboo Team Blog)
In addition to my initial thoughts on Windows 8 highlights, key takeaways from the BUILD Conference included: For the End User: Touch experience; Metro Style (tiled UI). No chrome screen. Every pixel is used to show content; Windows Apps - downloadable and installable without IT intervention. Apps are fully functional programs that run in a sandbox environment. Apps can share data between each other.
