3 Reasons to Not Write Custom Code for SharePoint 2010 (CMSWire)
Considering writing some custom code for your SharePoint implementation? Think again. SharePoint Can Do Many Things: SharePoint 2010 is a product of considerable size. It’s feature set is split into six separate areas by Microsoft. These areas cover social networking, communities and collaboration, search, business intelligence and much much more. In short SharePoint is a behemoth of a tool.

Microsoft's Windows on ARM Better for Partners Than Us (PC Magazine)
Microsoft's partners are undoubtedly pleased with its decision to port future versions of Windows to the ARM architecture. But should consumers be? I'm much less sure. Rumors of the Windows-ARM partnership slipped out in December, prompting derision from some quarters. Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows division at Microsoft, explained that the decision was made at a time in the development process where Microsoft could accommodate other designs.

Microsoft Can Reverse Its Misfortunes: 10 Ways to Do It (eWeek)
Microsoft finds itself in an interesting position. On one hand, the software giant is still a dominant force in the technology industry, generating billions of dollars every quarter, thanks to its many product efforts around the world. On the other hand, it has witnessed its importance in the space decline over the past few years as Google, Apple and other competitors have made it look outdated and confused.

Google Wins Freeze on U.S. Contract With Microsoft (Bloomberg)
Google Inc. won a temporary court order halting the award of a $49.3 million contract favoring Microsoft Corp. for an e-mail system serving the U.S. Interior Department. A federal judge in Washington stopped the U.S. from proceeding with a Microsoft system for the department’s 88,000 employees in an order unsealed yesterday. U.S. Court of Federal Claims Judge Susan Braden the cited deficiencies in the procurement process in her order freezing award of the contract.

Is Your IT Job Safe in the Cloud? (IT World)
Cisco is the latest company to release customer research into cloud computing trends, and only an average of 18 percent of respondents worldwide said they are using the cloud in any capacity. However, the outlook is better, as 88 percent said they planned to take up the cloud in some capacity within three years. The world is full of good intentions, of course, and surveys tend to be optimistic. That's why companies pay to have them done.

Microsoft at CES: Not Much New to Talk About (Seattle Post Intelligencer)
As Microsoft's opening keynote for the International Consumer Electronics Show was winding down tonight, Gartner Research analyst Michael Gartenberg tweeted at Frank Shaw, Microsoft's head PR guy: "@fxshaw show me something new please" I retweeted it; it seemed to sum up the keynote nicely. After juicy rumors gurgled online for days leading up to the event, Microsoft today gave techies little to chew on as they prepared for a weekend of gadgets and nerdery in Las Vegas.

Error Occurred in Deployment Step ‘Recycle IIS Application Pool’: The Local SharePoint Server is Not Available. (SharePoint Thoughts)
Ever wonder why folks think to immediately look to SQL before looking at solutions that may be offered by SharePoint?  It seems that folks are often times quicker to jump into "let's figure out the database" mode than they actually trying to understand how to manage state through SharePoint itself.

Fun with SharePoint 2010 Pages (T3chnicalLead)
I was recently asked to look into why a page could not be checked-in after editing.  The person in question had completed all the basics check including permissions et al, but still could not check the page back in after editing.  I quickly resolved the problem, but realised that it may not always be straight forward so here are a couple of key things to consider when troubleshooting the authoring of pages:

Making the Case for SharePoint Training: Part 1 (SharePoint Magazine)
Last time in this column, I talked about the cost of training employees, and I think I may have scared a few people by showing exactly how expensive it can be to send an employee away to train for a month. So, why do smart companies still invest so massively in training their employees? Read on, and I’ll tell you why those investments make sense. Assumptions, Assumptions, Assumptions…

Troubleshooting FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint Installation (SharePointEduTech)
FAST Search Server for SharePoint 2010 is a  rel high-end Search solution on the top of SharePoint 2010, but sometimes its installation and configuration can surprise us. In my experience, there are some typical error messages and solutions I’ve collected in a list for you. Hope it’ll help and save some time while you’re installing:

SharePoint 2010 Cookbook: Resource Throttling Settings for Large Lists (SharePoint 2010)
Consistent with its past behavior for this platform, SharePoint 2010 enhances those features we found to be 'good' with MOSS/WSS v3.0, improves upon those things we found to be 'not so good,' and offers us new functionality and features we wished were there in the previous iteration.  One of these improvements is the ability to work with large lists - measured by the number of items included at the root of a list or in a view. SharePoint 2010 permits a list to have up to 50 million items! Can you imagine the performance impact of such a list on the Web front-end, database, and other clients attempting to access a site which is attempting to process even half this number?!
